Miller County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the in-custody death of an inmate early Monday morning.

According to a press release, on Monday, April 30, 2018 at approximately 2 a.m., Miller County Detention Center Officers notified EMS of a prisoner in need of emergency medical attention. The prisoner, identified as 60-year-old Welton Watson was being held on Possession of a Controlled Substance and Parole Violation charge, and had been suffering from an unrelated long term medical condition.

Mr. Watson had been incarcerated in the Miller County Detention Center on similar charges in March, and had been released due to his serious medical condition. Mr. Watson was arrested on other agency charges again in April.

Early this morning Mr. Watson began experiencing medical issues believed to be related to his pre-existing medical condition and was transported by ambulance to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana. Mr. Watson died while undergoing treatment at Wadley.

The Miller County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an in-Custody Death investigation, and the Arkansas State Medical Examiner in Little Rock will conduct an autopsy to determine the precise nature and cause of death.
