Alleged suicide turns to murder investigation, one arrested

A 70-year-old man was arrested and charged with murder after authorities said he shot a man inside a Hope home early Tuesday morning.

Lee T. Momon was taken into custody for murder in the first degree by detectives of the Hope Police Department. Momon is being held in the Hempstead County Law Enforcement Center Detention Facility, where he is awaiting a probable cause determination and first appearance.

Hope Police Department said at 12:49 a.m. authorities initially responded to a call for service regarding a shooting at 2108 West Avenue E.

Upon arrival, Willie J. Gulley, 60, was found deceased inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the body. According to officials, the witness information that was provided to officers during preliminary investigation led authorities to believe Gulley committed suicide.

However, upon further investigation, the suicide investigation turned out to be a homicide. According to Hope authorities, the review of the physical evidence allowed for homicide as the manner of death.

Criminal Investigators carried out further investigation which revealed that 3 brothers resided together at the residence.

Lee T. Momon and Willie Gulley became involved in an argument. During the argument, Momon shot Gulley with a handgun.
