Who let the dogs out?

Responsible Dog Ownership Day sponsored by Ark-La-Tex Obedience Training Club will provide useful information on caring for our four-legged family members at Spring Lake Park this Saturday, the 7th.

The Texarkana, Texas Police Department will hold demonstrations with their dogs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to show how dogs are able to find drugs hidden in vehicles. The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office will be there with their search and rescue dogs too.

Admission is free, but individual vendors will be charging for their goods and services.

Main topics will include:

  • Importance of regular preventative shots
  • Spaying/neutering
  • Dog obedience

Ark-La-Texas Spay and Neutering will be providing discounted shots and microchips for dogs. Dogs who are not properly vaccinated or given shots can turn into fatal cases.

  • $8 for rabies shot
  • $10 for 7-1 Parvo/distemper
  • $10 Bordatella shot
  • $12 Feline 4-1 shot
  • $15 Feline Leukemia

“They could get rabies, they could get Parvo – and Parvo is a killer almost automatically,” Jimmeye Moore, an organizer for the event, said.

Moore said she was told by a city official that Responsible Dog Ownership Day draws one of the largest crowds at the park. She also said the event continues to grow each year.

“All of these rescue people are really good. All animals adopted are up-to-date on shots and micro-chipped,” Moore said.
