The Texarkana Texas Police Department has made an arrest in connection to the death of a two year old boy earlier this week.

After an exhaustive investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant overnight for Cifford James Gayton, 18, of Texarkana Texas, for Capital Murder.

After receiving information that Gayton may have been at a relative’s home in the 3700 block of Elizabeth Street, patrol officers went there about 4:00 this morning. The relative allowed the officers come inside, and Gayton was found a few minutes later as he attempted to hide under a bathroom cabinet. He was arrested and transported to the Bi-State Jail without incident.

Officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Elizabeth Street at 12:22 a.m. on January 28, 2016. Upon arrival, they were directed to an unresponsive two year old boy inside an apartment. Efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased a short time later. Gayton had been babysitting the victim and a younger sibling that evening while the mother was at work.

Gayton is currently being held without bond.
