A&M-Texarkana Eagles take first place in inaugural Benjamin D. Dennis, Sr. Freedom Quiz Bowl

A four-student team from the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Student Success Center took first place at the inaugural Benjamin D. Dennis, Sr. Freedom Quiz Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 4, in the Dan Haskins Student Center at Texas High School.

Team members included K.G. Ganado, Alana Briley, Allison Johnson and Allison Stanley, all of Texarkana, Texas.

Fifty Men Plus and Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Texarkana Twin Cities Chapter hosted the event, which celebrated African American history and culture.

Teams from Arkansas High School placed second and fourth in the competition, and Texarkana College placed third.

Participating teams included Arkansas High School, Liberty-Eylau High School, Texas High School, Texarkana College, Jack and Jill, and Texas A&M University-Texarkana.

Dennis, president of the Greater Texarkana Branch of the NAACP for 17 years, died on July 1, 2015. He was a retired process manager for International Paper, a trustee and Sunday school teacher at Rosehill COGIC, and a former member, ordained deacon, Sunday school superintendent, trustee, male chorus and choir member, and VBS teacher at the Eleventh Street Baptist Church.

He earned an associate degree in business administration at Texarkana College and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Texas A&M University-Texarkana.

“This event was an opportunity for the students and community to honor and celebrate the legacy of Mr. Dennis and also to learn about the rich contributions of African Americans to our society,” said Kimberly Bursey -Reece, president of Fifty Men Plus and Jack and Jill of America, Inc., Texarkana Twin Cities Chapter Foundation chair. “We look forward to continuing this tradition in the future.”
