The Texarkana Texas Police Department continues to investigate an incident on Tuesday evening where a one year old girl was mauled by a dog at her residence. The child remains in critical condition this morning with a fractured skull and multiple lacerations to her head and face.

At 6:32 last night, officers were dispatched to a call of a child being attacked by a dog at a residence in the 1600 block of W. 21st Street. When officers arrived, they were directed to the back yard where a pit bull dog had the girl’s head in its mouth. Fearing for the child’s safety, one of the officers was forced to shoot the dog three times. After it released the child, an officer immediately grabbed her and carried her to the waiting LifeNet Ambulance. She was transported to Christus St. Michael Hospital and later air lifted to Arkansas Children’s Hospital.

The dog, which died at the scene, was a family pet and was chained in the yard when it attacked the child. The dog body is being transported to the Texas Department of State Health Services in Austin for testing.

Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
