Baylor Proud magazine has a feature article on Texarkana native Klayton Shores this month. Brace yourself; this may be the most Baylor Proud vehicle you’ve ever seen.
Former Baylor football player Klayton Shoals, BA ’07, found a unique way to honor his alma mater — by taking a Chevy truck from 1950 (the year Floyd Casey Stadium opened) and remodeling it to honor his former program and the Bears’ longtime home.
The 1950 “Floyd Casey Tribute” Chevy truck is, of course, gold with a solid green stripe (just like the Bears’ helmets of that era). Detail work? The tailgate features the Baylor wordmark filled with images from the program’s history, and the center of the steering wheel is the university seal. Even the engine is green and gold and adorned with a Sailor Bear logo.
Perhaps the most impressive element is the bed of the truck, which is labeled “This is Bear Country” and boasts the signatures of almost every Baylor football player and coach from the Floyd Casey era. Shoals tracked down the autographs during the 2013 season, when the Baylor “B” Association held reunions at each home game.
“It’s a one of a kind truck,” says Shoals, who now owns and operates Shoals Body Shop in Texarkana, Texas. “You won’t find another one like it in the world, from the signatures, to the custom engraved artwork that’s featured in the vehicle.” He says he will make more custom Baylor vehicles, but isn’t sure what his next project will be.
