A&M-Texarkana to offer Certified Occupational Safety Manager and Certified Occupational Safety Specialist programs this spring

February 5 @ 8:00 am - February 23 @ 5:00 pm

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Office of Extended Education and Community Development will offer Certified Occupational Safety Specialist and Certified Occupational Safety Manager programs on the dates below:

  • Feb 5-9 on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas (COSM)
  • Feb 19-23 on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas (COSS)

Both of these programs are unique, curriculum-based programs that build a solid foundation in both general industry and construction knowledge for the beginning safety practitioner as well as the experienced safety professional. And as safety professionals move along in their career path they are in need of training designed for a high-level safety manager.

These programs meet the requirements outlined in the American National Standards Institute’s Criteria for Accepted Practices in Safety, Health and Environmental Training Standard.

The courses consist of 40 hours of hands-on, instructor-led learning, delivered by OSHA-authorized trainers and are designed to equip workers with the core competencies they need to succeed in occupational safety and health. The manager course requires the completion of the COSS course prior to taking the COSM.

COSS graduates will be able to determine the true cost of accidents; calculate total recordable incident rates; search company and public records to assess where the likelihood of an accident may lie; master the use of the Code of Federal Regulations (construction and general industry); identify hazards, determine regulatory requirements, implement corrective actions and train personnel in required changes; complete risk analyses for key jobs and processes; perform thorough accident investigations; develop and implement a safety audit and inspection program; communicate corporate safety initiatives and goals; and develop and maintain company safety plans and manuals.

COSM graduates will study areas of Essentials of Safety Management, Strategic Planning & Evaluating for Safety Success, Managing Risk & Safety Finances, Communicating the Safety Message, and Injury Management, Incentives & Discipline.

“We are excited to offer these safety programs for our corporate partners in the region, as well as the state of Texas, and are pleased to be able to educate individuals who are interested in learning more about occupational safety and health,” said Shelley Caraway, director of Extended Education and Community Development at A&M-Texarkana. “Our goal is to deliver the professional preparation required for workplace advancement and success.”

The cost of the course and materials is $1,699.  For registration and additional information, contact Shelley Caraway at EECD@Tamut.edu or you can visit our marketplace to register at:
