SUMMARY:CASA for Children Calls for More Volunteers During National Child Abuse Prevention Month
DESCRIPTION:April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month\, and CASA for Children  is raising awareness about child abuse and neglect and the need for more dedicated members of the community to step up and become CASA volunteers. \nWhen a child is placed in the foster care system due to abuse or neglect\, they are often removed from their home and placed in state care – sometimes far away from their family\, loved ones and community. CASA volunteers\, or Court Appointed Special Advocates\, are everyday people from all walks of life who are recruited and specially trained to advocate for these children and provide a consistent\, reliable adult presence for them during a difficult time in their life. \n“In addition to the trauma they have already experienced due to the initial abuse or neglect\, foster care can take a toll on children\,” said Brandy Eldridge\, Executive Director of CASA for Children and the Texarkana Children’s Advocacy Center. “They need an advocate who will get to know them\, speak up for them and ensure their needs are met while they are in the system\, and that is what our volunteers provide.” \nCASA volunteers are assigned to one child or sibling group to advocate for their best interest in court\, in school and in other settings. They get to know the child and everyone involved in their life\, such as family members\, foster parents\, therapists and teachers\, in order to develop a realistic picture of the child’s unique situation. They make recommendations to the judge overseeing the child’s case\, with the goal of ensuring that the child is safe and has the resources needed to heal. \n“Even one child victim of abuse or neglect is too many\, and it is critical that we continue to raise awareness of this issue in our community and nationwide\,” said Eldridge. “But becoming a CASA volunteer is a way to take it beyond just awareness\, and do your part to help break the cycle for future generations.”    \nLocally\, CASA for Children served 375 children in the foster care system in an eight county area surrounding Texarkana in 2017\, and the Texarkana Children’s Advocacy Center served 668 (more than 1\,000 abused and neglected children served each year).  This April\, consider stepping up to make a difference for these children by becoming a CASA volunteer. \n“We at CASA for Children always hope for the day when CASA and a national month dedicated to child abuse prevention are no longer needed because all children have the safe\, loving home they deserve\,” said Eldridge. “Until then\, we will continue to seek more members of the community to join our growing movement\, and we will not rest until we can provide a CASA volunteer for every child who needs one.” \nApril is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. If you see abuse\, in Texas report it to 1(800) 252-5400 or go to www.txabusehotline.org\, or in Arkansas report it to 1(800)482-5964. If a child’s life is in danger\, call 911. For more information on CASA\, visit www.BecomeaCASA.org or www.casatexarkana.org. The next volunteer information sessions will be Thursday\, April 12\, 9:30 a.m. or 5:30 p.m. at 1201 Main Street\, Texarkana\, Texas. \n  \n  \nCASA Events In Honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month: \n  \nChild Abuse Prevention Month Kick-Off – Proclamation Reading & CASA’s Tiny Casa Unveiling – Friday\, April 6\, 10:00 a.m. at Ledwell Machinery\, 910 E. Loop Drive\, Texarkana\, Texas.  Both Texas and Arkansas Mayors will be on hand to proclaim April as Child Abuse Prevention month in Texarkana.  Also\, CASA and Texarkana College Construction Technology’s program will debut this year’s tiny house. \nCASA is extremely grateful for a strong community partnership with the Texarkana College and is excited to unveil this year’s tiny house at this Kick-Off event.   “Texarkana College is honored to be a part of the efforts to raise funds and awareness for CASA and the Texarkana Children’s Advocacy Center\,” said TC president James Henry Russell. “The students in our Construction Technology program not only learn valuable skills while working on the project but also learn the importance of serving the community and giving back your time and resources to those in need. This is our tenth year serving as a partner with CASA on this project and it has been a source of pride for both our students and faculty to know the proceeds from the raffle go to such an important cause.” \nCASA’s Tiny CASA tours and chances to win the tiny house will be available immediately after the Proclamation Reading. \n  \nWear Blue Day – Friday\, April 6\, On this day\, Join CASA for Children and individuals and organizations all over the nation banding together to make a visible commitment to preventing child abuse and supporting strong families and healthy children.  WEAR BLUE anywhere – to work\, to school\, a community event\, the gym\, and even at home. Invite your friends\, family\, students\, co-workers or even your entire office to WEAR BLUE too! It doesn’t matter if it’s a blue shirt or blue suede shoes\, the unified\, community-wide act of wearing blue will help raise awareness that child abuse is preventable.  (Why Blue?  In the spring of 1989\, a grandmother from Virginia began the blue ribbon campaign as a tribute to her grandson\, a three-year old who died at the hands of his mother’s abusive boyfriend.  Since that time\, concerned citizens all over the country have worn blue as a symbol of the need to prevent child abuse and neglect.) \nAlso\, drive by the CASA for Children office and see our building decked-out in blue ribbons and blue lights for the month of April. \nSaturday\, April 7th – CASA’s Tiny Casa\, Tours and chances to win the tiny house will be available at Twisted Fork\, 5522 Summerhill Road (shopping center on the corner of Summerhill and Moores Lane) from 9:00am – 1:00pm.  Members of Arkansas High School’s Family Career and Community Leaders of America group will open the tiny house for tours and offer $20 chances to win\, as well as sharing information about becoming CASA Volunteers. \nApril 15th – CASA’s 13th Annual Songwriters on the Edge of Texas Concert – 6:00pm\, Northridge Country Club – Featuring BOB SCHNEIDER\, the Warren Hood Duo\, and The Moss Brothers.  Dinner by Outback Steakhouse.  General admission tickets available for $75 at www.casatexarkana.org/songwriters. \nCASA’s Tiny Casa will be given away during the Songwriters concert on April 15th.  Only 1\,500 tickets will be sold and can be purchased online for $20 each at www.casatexarkana.org/tinyhouse. \nApril 16th – CASA’s 13th Annual Songwriters Golf Tournament\, Northridge Country Club – 11:30\, Lunch & Registration\, 8:00 Morning or 1:00 Afternoon Tee times available.  Four-person scramble teams $600 or individual golf entry fee $150\, and includes a Songwriters concert ticket and Lunch by Texas Roadhouse.  For Golf Team registration or more information\, contact Leigh Davis at 903-792-1030.

SUMMARY:NICU celebration
DESCRIPTION:Wadley Regional Medical Center will be hosting its first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Birthday Celebration on Saturday\, April 7th from 10am-12pm.  The NICU Birthday Party will be held in the front of the hospital between the Main Entrance and the Day Surgery entrance.  This is a chance to celebrate all babies who have been cared for in the Wadley NICU over the years. An invitation is warmly extended to the many patients and their families who received care in the Wadley NICU\, which was recently designated a Level II NICU in November 2017. \n  \nThis celebration is an opportunity for families from around the Texarkana area to reunite with nurses who not only cared for their babies\, but helped the parents through an emotional and trying time.  “The staff has been the driving force behind getting this event put together\,” claims Shelby Brown\, director of marketing and planning for Wadley. “They are so excited to be able to reconnect with these very special deliveries and their families!”    \n  \nThere will be lots of games for the kids to play\, balloon animals by Daryl Miller\, hand prints\, and face painting.  To commemorate the day\, there will be a photo area for families to use their own camera. A birthday party would not be complete without a Birthday cake\, popcorn\, and a lemonade stand for all to enjoy. There will be fabulous Door Prizes and every child will receive a gift. \n  \n“We are excited to see these patients and families that it’s been our honor to care for in our NICU\,” says Antonette Reed\, Director Maternal and Child\, Wadley Regional Medical Center. “We hope that April’s NICU Birthday Party will be the first of many more to come in the years ahead. It should be a fun time for our current and former nurses to reconnect with patients who are now growing up healthy and strong!” \n  \nThe Texarkana Arkansas Fire Department will be on hand with a fire truck for children to experience up close and Sylvia Jennings with the Texas Department of Public Safety will be available for car seat checks.  It is important to have you child in a car seat\, but just as important is to have them restrained correctly. The Wadley Trauma Department will also have information on Arkansas and Texas State laws in reference to seatbelt usage. \n  \nWadley has been the Birth Place of Texarkana for generations. With the area’s most experienced birthing staff\, Wadley has set a precedent for childbirth excellence in the Four-State area by being the first designated 10 Step Hospital and first Mother-Friendly Worksite in Texarkana. The Texas 10 Step program\, developed in 1999\, is a method for improving maternity care practices in birthing facilities. The program aids birthing facilities in improving breastfeeding outcomes through adoption of best practices. As a Mother-Friendly Worksite\, Wadley Regional Medical Center proactively supports employees who choose to breastfeed their infants.  Our nursery provides newborn\, transition and Level II intensive care with 24-hour neonatology service. Additionally\, Wadley Regional Medical Center is a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Blue Distinction+ Center for Maternity Care – the only in Texarkana\, demonstrating better overall patient satisfaction and a lower percentage of early elective deliveries.

SUMMARY:The Big Event 2018
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 14\, students\, faculty\, staff and alumni from Texas A&M University-Texarkana will show their appreciation to the Texarkana community during The Big Event: Eagle Pride City Wide\, a day of community service. \nThis annual event for A&M-Texarkana started last year with an overwhelming show of support and volunteer participation. Participants in The Big Event complete “done-in-a-day” community service projects ranging from raking leaves\, washing windows\, removing debris\, cleaning closets\, spreading mulch\, painting and minor repairs to organizing donated goods\, participating in games and activities with senior citizens\, tutoring children and completing other proposed projects. \nMichael Stephenson\, Coordinator of Student Life and Project Manager for The Big Event said “Last year\, our inaugural event boasted over 250 volunteers from our campus community that logged nearly 1\,000 service hours. For one day\, our campus community of students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni united to extend a helping hand by performing community service on both sides of the state line.” He added\, “This is simply our way of showing our gratitude for the community’s unwavering support of our university.” \nThe Big Event has become somewhat of a national phenomenon at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States. It originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 when six students felt the need to give something back to the communities of College Station and Bryan\, Texas. Since that time\, more than 100 universities have joined the effort. \n“We reformatted the national event to a big\, one day event\, we could unite the entire campus community\, not just students\,” said Stephenson. “At the conclusion of last year’s event\, my heart was completely full. Our campus truly made an impact on local parks\, neighborhoods\, and organizations. We look forward to serving Texarkana again this year.” Stephenson said. \nA&M-Texarkana is now accepting applications for work sites and sponsors for The Big Event. \n“We have great opportunities for local organizations and non-profits to be a part of this event\,” Stephenson said. \nIf you are a local business and want to sponsor the event\, visit www.tamut.edu/bigevent. Project requests are due by March 23rd and volunteer/participant registration will end on March 31st. \nFor more information\, contact Michael Stephenson\, Coordinator of Student Life\, at Michael.Stephenson@tamut.edu or (903) 223-1362.

SUMMARY:50th Annual Jonquil Festival at Historic Washington State Park
DESCRIPTION:Since 1969\, thousands have descended on the little town of Washington\, Arkansas to celebrate the Jonquil Festival. It originally began when Mrs. Grace Harris\, a resident of Washington\, relayed an idea to the executive director of the Pioneer Washington Restoration Foundation\, Mrs. Georgia Haynes about her idea of a special event. \nThe idea for the Jonquil Festival was this: since jonquils and daffodils had been planted by pioneer families of the area over 100 years ago\, it would be a great idea to have a regional springtime event when they are in bloom. \nTogether\, with nature showing off her beautiful showmanship of flora and the aesthetic allure of the historic homes of early Washington\, a festival was born. Originally\, the festival was called the Jonquil and Daffodil Trail and lasted 8 days. \nThe name change from the Jonquil and Daffodil Trail to the Jonquil Festival happened in 1972 and in 1976 the festival was changed from lasting 8 days to 3. \nIn 1978\, more than 5\,000 King Alfred bulbs were imported from Holland and added to the already existing jonquils and daffodils in the historic town making it even more vibrant. \nToday\, 50 jonquil festivals later\, we still celebrate the idea put together by Mrs. Grace Harris and have continued to strive to host\, what we at the park think as\, the premier festival in southwest Arkansas. \nSo\, join us March 16th-18th\, for our 50th annual Jonquil Festival. The festival begins at 9 a.m. all three days and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tours of the park will be regular price and parking is $5. Call us at (870) 983-2684 for more information.

An estimated 100\,000 slaves between 1830 and the end of the Civil War in 1865 chose to embark on this journey in search of freedom. They moved in constant fear of being killed or recaptured\, returned\, and beaten as an example of what would happen to others who might choose to run. Under the cover of darkness\, “fugitives” traveled roughly twenty miles each night traversing rugged terrain while enduring all the hardships that Mother Nature could bring to bear. Occasionally\, they were guided from one secret\, safe location to the next by an ever-changing\, clandestine group known as the Underground Railroad. Many consider the Underground Railroad to be the first great freedom movement in the Americas and the first time when people of different races and faiths worked together in harmony for freedom and justice. Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad opens January 28 at the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council. \nPhotographer Jeanine Michna-Bales has spent more than a decade meticulously researching “fugitive” slaves and the ways they escaped to freedom. While the unnumbered routes of the Underground Railroad encompassed countless square miles\, the path Michna-Bales documented encompasses roughly 2\,000 miles and is based off of actual sites\, cities\, and places that freedom-seekers passed through during their journey. \nWhether they were slaves trying to escape or free blacks and whites trying to help\, both sides risked everything for the cause of freedom. From the cotton plantations south of Natchitoches\, Louisiana\, all the way north to the Canadian border\, this series of photographs by Michna-Bales helps us imagine what the long road to freedom may have looked like as seen through the eyes of one of those who made this epic journey. \nWhile many books have been written on the subject\, there is very little visual documentation of the Underground Railroad because of its secretive nature. Today\, as America becomes more and more diverse\, Michna-Bales believes that an understanding of the experience—and those who lived through it—is more relevant than ever. The Underground Railroad united people from different races\, genders\, social levels\, religions\, and regions in a common and worthwhile cause. It was the first civil rights movement within America. Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad encourages visitors to learn more\, ask questions\, and open a dialogue on the subject\, and in the end\, provide a better understanding of our origins. \nThis exhibition features beautifully dramatic color photographs\, ephemera\, and narratives that together tell the story of the Underground Railroad. The author is working with Princeton Architectural Press to prepare a publication that will combine eighty-two original photographs and text with a diverse sampling of related ephemera. \nThis exhibition was organized by ExhibitsUSA\, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance.”\n \n \nThe Regional Arts Center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 AM until 4 PM. Admission is always free. \nFree School and Community Group Tours Available! Call Amy Donohoe at 903-792-8681 to schedule.

SUMMARY:Run the Line Half Marathon Will Begin at 7:30 am\, February 18th
DESCRIPTION:The Ark-La-Tex’s premier half marathon\, Run the Line\, reports record number of sign-ups for this point in time in race registrations. \n  \nRun the Line is a unique event because it’s one of the few races run in two states. Many athletes seek out the race because they’re trying to run in every state\, and Run the Line allows them to score two in a single day – Arkansas and Texas. Additionally\, it’s partly run on paved walking trails\, which not only makes the race unique\, but makes it fit the mission of the organizing committee. Joe Saul-Sehy is President of the Board for Partnership for the Pathway\, the charitable group the race supports. \n  \n“Run the Line is easily our biggest fundraiser for walking trails around Texarkana. Each year\, we’re able to make our city more beautiful because so many locals and new friends from all over the nation come to run in our city. It’s an exciting day for trails and also for the community at large.” \n  \nSo far\, Saul-Sehy reports that runners have registered from 14 states\, including the event’s first ever entry from Montana. “We’re so proud\, though\, of our local runners. The Texarkana community really supports this event. I think out of town athletes talk highly about us because so many organizations and both cities come together to support this event and walking trails.” \n  \nRun the Line Half Marathon will begin at 7:30 am\, February 18th at Broad and Main Street in front of the Bi-State Justice Building in downtown Texarkana. Registrations are currently open for runners and walkers in the half marathon\, two-person relay\, and four-person relay events at \nhttps://runsignup.com/Race/TX/Texarkana/RuntheLineHalfMarathonTXAR  Organizers have a website at: www.txkruntheline.org and maintain a race Facebook page. \n  \nAs in past years\, a big finish line celebration is planned at the finish line in front of Hopkins Ice House. Long time race announcer Mike Jones will be aided by the local Four States Amateur Radio Club\, so they’ll be announcing race results from around the course throughout the event. \n  \nBoth Saul-Sehy and Julie-Ray Harrison are available for interviews or comment. Email joesaulsehy@ymail.com or call me at (903)733-3577 for more information. \n
