SUMMARY:50th Annual Jonquil Festival at Historic Washington State Park
DESCRIPTION:Since 1969\, thousands have descended on the little town of Washington\, Arkansas to celebrate the Jonquil Festival. It originally began when Mrs. Grace Harris\, a resident of Washington\, relayed an idea to the executive director of the Pioneer Washington Restoration Foundation\, Mrs. Georgia Haynes about her idea of a special event. \nThe idea for the Jonquil Festival was this: since jonquils and daffodils had been planted by pioneer families of the area over 100 years ago\, it would be a great idea to have a regional springtime event when they are in bloom. \nTogether\, with nature showing off her beautiful showmanship of flora and the aesthetic allure of the historic homes of early Washington\, a festival was born. Originally\, the festival was called the Jonquil and Daffodil Trail and lasted 8 days. \nThe name change from the Jonquil and Daffodil Trail to the Jonquil Festival happened in 1972 and in 1976 the festival was changed from lasting 8 days to 3. \nIn 1978\, more than 5\,000 King Alfred bulbs were imported from Holland and added to the already existing jonquils and daffodils in the historic town making it even more vibrant. \nToday\, 50 jonquil festivals later\, we still celebrate the idea put together by Mrs. Grace Harris and have continued to strive to host\, what we at the park think as\, the premier festival in southwest Arkansas. \nSo\, join us March 16th-18th\, for our 50th annual Jonquil Festival. The festival begins at 9 a.m. all three days and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tours of the park will be regular price and parking is $5. Call us at (870) 983-2684 for more information.

An estimated 100\,000 slaves between 1830 and the end of the Civil War in 1865 chose to embark on this journey in search of freedom. They moved in constant fear of being killed or recaptured\, returned\, and beaten as an example of what would happen to others who might choose to run. Under the cover of darkness\, “fugitives” traveled roughly twenty miles each night traversing rugged terrain while enduring all the hardships that Mother Nature could bring to bear. Occasionally\, they were guided from one secret\, safe location to the next by an ever-changing\, clandestine group known as the Underground Railroad. Many consider the Underground Railroad to be the first great freedom movement in the Americas and the first time when people of different races and faiths worked together in harmony for freedom and justice. Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad opens January 28 at the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council. \nPhotographer Jeanine Michna-Bales has spent more than a decade meticulously researching “fugitive” slaves and the ways they escaped to freedom. While the unnumbered routes of the Underground Railroad encompassed countless square miles\, the path Michna-Bales documented encompasses roughly 2\,000 miles and is based off of actual sites\, cities\, and places that freedom-seekers passed through during their journey. \nWhether they were slaves trying to escape or free blacks and whites trying to help\, both sides risked everything for the cause of freedom. From the cotton plantations south of Natchitoches\, Louisiana\, all the way north to the Canadian border\, this series of photographs by Michna-Bales helps us imagine what the long road to freedom may have looked like as seen through the eyes of one of those who made this epic journey. \nWhile many books have been written on the subject\, there is very little visual documentation of the Underground Railroad because of its secretive nature. Today\, as America becomes more and more diverse\, Michna-Bales believes that an understanding of the experience—and those who lived through it—is more relevant than ever. The Underground Railroad united people from different races\, genders\, social levels\, religions\, and regions in a common and worthwhile cause. It was the first civil rights movement within America. Through Darkness to Light: Photographs Along the Underground Railroad encourages visitors to learn more\, ask questions\, and open a dialogue on the subject\, and in the end\, provide a better understanding of our origins. \nThis exhibition features beautifully dramatic color photographs\, ephemera\, and narratives that together tell the story of the Underground Railroad. The author is working with Princeton Architectural Press to prepare a publication that will combine eighty-two original photographs and text with a diverse sampling of related ephemera. \nThis exhibition was organized by ExhibitsUSA\, a program of Mid-America Arts Alliance.”\n \n \nThe Regional Arts Center is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 AM until 4 PM. Admission is always free. \nFree School and Community Group Tours Available! Call Amy Donohoe at 903-792-8681 to schedule.

SUMMARY:Run the Line Half Marathon Will Begin at 7:30 am\, February 18th
DESCRIPTION:The Ark-La-Tex’s premier half marathon\, Run the Line\, reports record number of sign-ups for this point in time in race registrations. \n  \nRun the Line is a unique event because it’s one of the few races run in two states. Many athletes seek out the race because they’re trying to run in every state\, and Run the Line allows them to score two in a single day – Arkansas and Texas. Additionally\, it’s partly run on paved walking trails\, which not only makes the race unique\, but makes it fit the mission of the organizing committee. Joe Saul-Sehy is President of the Board for Partnership for the Pathway\, the charitable group the race supports. \n  \n“Run the Line is easily our biggest fundraiser for walking trails around Texarkana. Each year\, we’re able to make our city more beautiful because so many locals and new friends from all over the nation come to run in our city. It’s an exciting day for trails and also for the community at large.” \n  \nSo far\, Saul-Sehy reports that runners have registered from 14 states\, including the event’s first ever entry from Montana. “We’re so proud\, though\, of our local runners. The Texarkana community really supports this event. I think out of town athletes talk highly about us because so many organizations and both cities come together to support this event and walking trails.” \n  \nRun the Line Half Marathon will begin at 7:30 am\, February 18th at Broad and Main Street in front of the Bi-State Justice Building in downtown Texarkana. Registrations are currently open for runners and walkers in the half marathon\, two-person relay\, and four-person relay events at \nhttps://runsignup.com/Race/TX/Texarkana/RuntheLineHalfMarathonTXAR  Organizers have a website at: www.txkruntheline.org and maintain a race Facebook page. \n  \nAs in past years\, a big finish line celebration is planned at the finish line in front of Hopkins Ice House. Long time race announcer Mike Jones will be aided by the local Four States Amateur Radio Club\, so they’ll be announcing race results from around the course throughout the event. \n  \nBoth Saul-Sehy and Julie-Ray Harrison are available for interviews or comment. Email joesaulsehy@ymail.com or call me at (903)733-3577 for more information. \n

SUMMARY:Go Red Day
DESCRIPTION:TEXarkana\, Texas:   In support of Go Red for Women\, Wadley Regional Medical Center is participating in the National Wear Red Day on Friday\, February 2.  Cardiovascular disease in the U.S. kills approximately one woman every 80 seconds. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red For Women advocates for more research and swifter action for women’s heart health. \nGo Red For Women is a movement to encourage women to know their numbers. It’s knowledge that could save your life.  Five numbers\, that all women should know to take control of their heart health are: Total Cholesterol\, HDL (good) Cholesterol\, Blood Pressure\, Blood Sugar and Body Mass Index (BMI). Knowing these numbers can help women and their healthcare provider determine their risk for developing cardiovascular diseases.  It’s time for all women to learn the most critical numbers in their life — their hearts depend on it. \nThe event will be held at the Wadley Senior Clinic from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. There will be vital information\, free blood screenings and blood pressure checks\, heart healthy snacks with recipe cards\, a free gift for every woman dressed in red\, and a chance to meet some of the providers of the Wadley HeartCare Network.

SUMMARY:Tiger Theatre Team Hosts Dual Christmas Productions
DESCRIPTION:Theatre goers will have double the fun during the holidays when they attend Texas High School Tiger Theatre Company’s dual productions of “What Could Go Wrong the Night Before Christmas?” and “Junie B. in Jingle Bells\, Batman Smells!” \n  \nThe delightful show of “What Could Go Wrong the Night Before Christmas?\,” by Kim Kao Hines\, tells the story of a host who attempts to do a lovely reading of The Night Before Christmas but is stymied by every imaginable interruption.  First\, the children show up wearing costumes and outfits for all the wrong holidays\, then it ends up the mice might not be stirring\, but they are shuffling as they play a game of Go Fish.  By the time the clatter on the rooftop sounds more like a deafening rock ‘n’ roll drum solo\, the poor host is about to have a meltdown!  On top of it all\, our not-quite-classic (and definitely thinner) Santa stops filling stockings to do a PSA on the dangers of smoking and also plugs the usefulness of stain remover pens. \n  \n“Junie B. in Jingle Bells\, Batman Smells!\,” from Allison Gregory and based upon the best-selling book series by Barbara Park\, is a story of Junie B. Jones\, a first-grader\, who is super excited about the upcoming Holiday Sing-Along and Secret Santa gift exchange at her school.  Too bad tattletale May keeps ruining all of Junie B.’s fun.  So when Junie B. draws May’s name for Secret Santa\, she comes up with the perfect plan to teach her nemesis a lesson!  But will the Christmas spirit of peace and goodwill interfere before she can give you-know-who what she deserves? \n  \nPerformances will be Friday and Saturday\, December 15-16 at 6:30 p.m. in the John Thomas Theatre of the Sullivan Performing Arts Center\, 3941 Summerhill Road. \n  \nOnline tickets are available for purchase for $8 (adults) and $4 (students) through www.ttcths.booktix.com.  Pricing at the door will be $10 and $5\, respectively. \n  \nFor more information\, contact Lisa Newton at 903.794.3891. \n

SUMMARY:World Aids Day
DESCRIPTION:Equality Texarkana has partnered with ARcare\, SWA-NET HIV Coalition\, and Special Health Resources of East Texas and on Friday\, December 1\, 2017 Equality Texarkana will host an eventful day where they will commemorate those lost to AIDS related illnesses\, those who are living and thriving with HIV\, in addition to providing free HIV testing\, information\, giveaways\, and lots more! The day will begin at 11:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.\, at 300 East 6th Street\, Texarkana\, Arkansas\, in the AHEC Lecture Hall–located upstairs. During this time\, there will be free HIV testing\, at absolutely no costs to the patrons. The HIV tests provided are administered via mouth swab and are pain free\, again–there is no costs to patrons.\n“World AIDS Day was first instituted on December 1\, 1988. Historically\, WAD has been a sacred opportunity to remember those who were lost to HIV in the previous year. Those lost to HIV are too often people who were not memorialized by family or friends due to the virus. It also serves to celebrate those who are living with and surviving HIV. Rarely\, are people living with HIV recognized for their struggle. They often must demonstrate great courage in the face of a disease that cannot be cured. Finally\, WAD is a day to rally the minds and hearts of people to end the isolation of people living with HIV\, end the stigma associated with HIV\, develop a deeper understanding of HIV\, and takes steps to end HIV transmission by getting screened for HIV. \nFollowing the 11:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. free HIV testing event everyone will meet from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. at the Dowd Pocket Park–located just east of East Broad Street and North Stateline Avenue intersection. During the second half of this day there will be speakers talking about their experiences of living and thriving with HIV and a presentation from ARcare highlighting the important information about HIV and AIDS. All of the organizations present will have literature pertaining to HIV\, AIDS\, and other STIs\, contraceptives\, etc. available for event goers to take home. There will also be a visually creative and soul stirring ceremony to commemorate those we’ve lost to AIDS-related illnesses and those who live strong and thrive with the virus until there is a cure. We will end the event and the day with a united candlelight ceremony.\nJoin Equality Texarkana\, ARcare\, SHRETS\, and SWA-NET HIV Coalition as we strive to accomplish these goals.
