SUMMARY:CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center Launches Swim Team
DESCRIPTION:A Meet-and-Greet and Registration event will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.\, Saturday\, May 19\, for kids interested in joining the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center children’s competitive swim team. \n“This is a program we are very excited about\, and we can’t wait to get it started\,” said Ben Mayo\, former swimmer for Texas High and Southern Methodist University\, who will be coaching the team. “Swimming is a fantastic activity for kids because it is fun\, it’s a great workout\, and it doesn’t put too much stress on the body. It’s great for all ages!” \nTo qualify for the team\, boys and girls\, ages 6 to 15\, must be able to swim 25 yards without stopping or needing assistance. During the May 19 event at the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center\, swimmers will have the chance to meet Coach Mayo and register for the team. The swim team will meet for practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. beginning May 29 at the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center pool. \nSwimmers must provide their own goggles and swimsuit (girls must wear one-piece swimsuits). The cost to be on the team will be $250 for members (including immediate family members of a member) and $300 for non-members. The fee will cover a swim cap\, race entry fees\, swim meet entry fees\, a pool pass and a team t-shirt. \n“During the summer months\, it’s important that kids get off the couch and get a good amount of activity to stay healthy\,” said Mayo. “This team will offer kids the chance to compete and have fun together – and also stay out of that summer heat by getting in the pool!” \nFor additional information\, please contact the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center at 903-614-4441 or go online to www.stmichaelfitness.com<http://www.stmichaelfitness.com>. Applications are available at the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center.

SUMMARY:A Life to Remember\, honoring mothers who've experienced the loss of an infant
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday May 12\, CHRISTUS ST. Michael Health System will host A Life to Remember\, an event honoring and comforting mothers who have experienced the unimaginable loss of an infant. \n“When a mother experiences the loss of a baby\, she faces a journey where hope and healing are needed\,” said Antoinette Peters\, Chaplain at CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital – Texarkana. “In honor of these mothers\, we will gather to remember the lives of the babies who were loved and died in the early weeks and months of their precious lives.” \nThe ceremony at the center of the Life to Remember event is dedicated to babies who die each year through pregnancy loss\, stillbirth or newborn death. The event is open to all mothers\, not only CHRISTUS St. Michael patients. All family members and friends are welcome to attend. \n“On Mother’s Day weekend\, it can be tough for these women\,” said Ms. Peters. “They may not be recognized like other women\, but they are mothers. With this event\, we seek to walk with them on their journey and offer comfort and support.” \nThis marks the fifth year for A Life to Remember. The event is set for Saturday May 12\, at 10:30am in the CHRISTUS St. Michael Serenity Garden. \nFor more information\, please contact: Antoinette Peters at 903.614.2076 or antoinette.peters@christushealth.org

SUMMARY:Arkansas ‘Farm to You’ exhibit teaches children about agriculture and health
DESCRIPTION:Fouke Elementary school children are learning about how the food they eat gets from the farm to their dinner table and how this food is used for good health. \n  \nApril 19th & 20th\, Arkansas Farm to You will be at Fouke Elementary. Arkansas Farm to You is an interactive\, walk-through display geared toward kindergarten through 6th grade students. The exhibit features ten stations that take the students from the farm\, to the table and through the body. \n  \nThrough this interactive exhibit students will learn where food comes from and how their food choices affect their health so they will make better food choices. \n  \nArkansas’ children\, like those nationwide\, are not eating enough fruits\, vegetables and whole grains or getting enough physical activity\, so there is a great need to teach children the importance of eating healthy and being physically active from an early age. Arkansas Farm to You is part of Cooperative Extension Service’s nutrition education program for youth that spans pre-K through 12th grade. \n  \nThe Farm to You adventure begins at Farmer Fred’s Arkansas Plate Farm. On his farm\, he raises dairy and beef cattle and chickens\, grows rice and beans in the fields and fruits and vegetables in the garden. Children learn that without Farmer Fred\, we wouldn’t have the foods needed for a tasty Arkansas Plate. \n  \nStudents learn to look closely at the Nutrition Facts labels on food packages and how to use the information to make good food choices. In the Healthy Café\, they practice building balanced meals by selecting a variety of foods from each of the food groups. \n  \nThe adventure continues into the mouth where they discuss the importance of keeping teeth clean by brushing and flossing every day. Then the students move to the stomach where they learn how healthy foods are digested into nutrients. They also learn to listen to their stomachs and eat just the right amount of food to be healthy. \n  \nThe students travel through the body learning about how food and physical activity help make them healthy and strong. The journey wraps up in the skin where they learn that frequent hand-washing and use of sunscreen helps protect skin on the outside. \n  \nThe University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture offers all its Extension and Research programs and services without regard to race\, color\, sex\, gender identity\, sexual orientation\, national origin\, religion\, age\, disability\, marital or veteran status\, genetic information\, or any other legally protected status\, and is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
