SUMMARY:Great Texarkana Duck Race Set for August 18\, 2018

SUMMARY:Tinkerfest 2018
DESCRIPTION:The tinkering returns to Downtown Texarkana courtesy of Discovery Place Interactive Museum and presenting sponsor Ledwell Machinery on Saturday\, June 2nd from 10 am until 4 pm.  “After last year’s success\, we have eagerly been waiting for the opportunity to present our 2nd Annual TinkerTown.  We’ve added new hands-on\, make and take activities and ‘tinkerers’ to the mix and we look forward to having an even better response than last year!”\, said Board President\, Velvet Cool. \nDownTown TinkerTown is a way of bringing children together with activities they might not normally get to experience.  From the lost art of making ropes and forging metal to new science facts such as how science applies to an everyday roll of toilet paper.  The activities aren’t just simple spaces where vendors hand out fliers about their products\, but children participate in hands-on activities and go home with an expanded knowledge\, not even realizing they’ve been learning rather than playing. \nSponsored in part by Ledwell Machinery\, an Anonymous Foundation managed by BancorpSouth\, Commercial National Bank and Main Street Texarkana\, there’s still time & room for local organizations to host their own make and take space. \nTickets to the event will be $10 per person with Family Pack Rates available also.  Tickets may be purchased at any museum location or through FaceBook or TicketLeap.com.  Call 903-793-4831 for more information on being a presenter or purchasing tickets.

SUMMARY:Community Healthcore to host Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day event
DESCRIPTION:What: Children and families throughout the community are invited to a free event to raise awareness about mental health and trauma. This year’s theme is Flight to Freedom: Help and Hope after Trauma. A multitude of child-serving agencies will have booths to give out information to parents about services in our community. We will also have treats\, games\, prizes\, and lots of fun activities and giveaways for the children and youth. \n  \nWhen:             Date: May 24\, 2018 \nTime: 4:00PM – 6:00PM \n  \nWhere:            Spring Lake Park\, 4303 N Park Rd\, Texarkana\, TX \n  \nHosted by Community Healthcore: Child and Adolescent Outpatient Services and the (STAR) Program \n  \nAccording to a 2011 report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)\, 60 percent of adults report experiencing abuse or other difficult family circumstances during childhood. The same report states 26 percent of children in the United States will experience or witness a traumatic event before they turn 4. Children who experience four or more adverse childhood experiences – such as bullying\, witnessing violence\, physical abuse\, and losing a parent to divorce – have a high risk of chronic health problems as adults\, such as heart disease\, cancer\, diabetes\, suicide\, and alcoholism. For example\, having four adverse experiences in childhood increases the risk of emphysema or chronic bronchitis by nearly 400 percent\, and suicide by 1200 percent.* However\, children who have one or more of the following protective factors in their lives are able to combat the negative effects of traumatic events: parental resilience\, social connections\, knowledge of parenting and child development\, concrete support in times of need\, and social and emotional competence of children (Horton\, 2003). \n  \nAccording to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)\, 50% of all cases of mental illness start by age 14\, and 75% by age 24. One in five youth between 13 and 18 live a with mental health condition. The CDC reports 16.7% of Texas high school students said they had serious thoughts of suicide within the past year. Suicide is second leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 10 and 24. 40% of children and youth who attempt suicide first try in elementary or middle school. It is vital for parents\, school personnel\, youth pastors\, and other people in the community who work with children and youth to be able to recognize the signs of mental illness and the impact of trauma on children’s lives in order better provide the help and hope that lead to recovery.

DESCRIPTION:A Meet-and-Greet and Registration event will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.\, Saturday\, May 19\, for kids interested in joining the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center children’s competitive swim team. \n“This is a program we are very excited about\, and we can’t wait to get it started\,” said Ben Mayo\, former swimmer for Texas High and Southern Methodist University\, who will be coaching the team. “Swimming is a fantastic activity for kids because it is fun\, it’s a great workout\, and it doesn’t put too much stress on the body. It’s great for all ages!” \nTo qualify for the team\, boys and girls\, ages 6 to 15\, must be able to swim 25 yards without stopping or needing assistance. During the May 19 event at the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center\, swimmers will have the chance to meet Coach Mayo and register for the team. The swim team will meet for practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 – 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. beginning May 29 at the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center pool. \nSwimmers must provide their own goggles and swimsuit (girls must wear one-piece swimsuits). The cost to be on the team will be $250 for members (including immediate family members of a member) and $300 for non-members. The fee will cover a swim cap\, race entry fees\, swim meet entry fees\, a pool pass and a team t-shirt. \n“During the summer months\, it’s important that kids get off the couch and get a good amount of activity to stay healthy\,” said Mayo. “This team will offer kids the chance to compete and have fun together – and also stay out of that summer heat by getting in the pool!” \nFor additional information\, please contact the CHRISTUS St. Michael Health & Fitness Center at 903-614-4441 or go online to www.stmichaelfitness.com<http://www.stmichaelfitness.com>. SUMMARY:A Life to Remember\, honoring mothers who've experienced the loss of an infant
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday May 12\, CHRISTUS ST. Michael Health System will host A Life to Remember\, an event honoring and comforting mothers who have experienced the unimaginable loss of an infant. \n“When a mother experiences the loss of a baby\, she faces a journey where hope and healing are needed\,” said Antoinette Peters\, Chaplain at CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital – Texarkana. “In honor of these mothers\, we will gather to remember the lives of the babies who were loved and died in the early weeks and months of their precious lives.” \nThe ceremony at the center of the Life to Remember event is dedicated to babies who die each year through pregnancy loss\, stillbirth or newborn death. The event is open to all mothers\, not only CHRISTUS St. Michael patients. All family members and friends are welcome to attend. \n“On Mother’s Day weekend\, it can be tough for these women\,” said Ms. Peters. “They may not be recognized like other women\, but they are mothers. With this event\, we seek to walk with them on their journey and offer comfort and support.” \nThis marks the fifth year for A Life to Remember. The event is set for Saturday May 12\, at 10:30am in the CHRISTUS St. Michael Serenity Garden. \nFor more information\, please contact: Antoinette Peters at 903.614.2076 or antoinette.peters@christushealth.org
