SUMMARY:Arkansas ‘Farm to You’ exhibit teaches children about agriculture and health
DESCRIPTION:Fouke Elementary school children are learning about how the food they eat gets from the farm to their dinner table and how this food is used for good health. \n  \nApril 19th & 20th\, Arkansas Farm to You will be at Fouke Elementary. Arkansas Farm to You is an interactive\, walk-through display geared toward kindergarten through 6th grade students. The exhibit features ten stations that take the students from the farm\, to the table and through the body.  \n  \nThrough this interactive exhibit students will learn where food comes from and how their food choices affect their health so they will make better food choices.  \n  \nArkansas’ children\, like those nationwide\, are not eating enough fruits\, vegetables and whole grains or getting enough physical activity\, so there is a great need to teach children the importance of eating healthy and being physically active from an early age. Arkansas Farm to You is part of Cooperative Extension Service’s nutrition education program for youth that spans pre-K through 12th grade.  \n  \nThe Farm to You adventure begins at Farmer Fred’s Arkansas Plate Farm. On his farm\, he raises dairy and beef cattle and chickens\, grows rice and beans in the fields and fruits and vegetables in the garden. Children learn that without Farmer Fred\, we wouldn’t have the foods needed for a tasty Arkansas Plate.  \n  \nStudents learn to look closely at the Nutrition Facts labels on food packages and how to use the information to make good food choices. In the Healthy Café\, they practice building balanced meals by selecting a variety of foods from each of the food groups. \n  \nThe adventure continues into the mouth where they discuss the importance of keeping teeth clean by brushing and flossing every day. Then the students move to the stomach where they learn how healthy foods are digested into nutrients. They also learn to listen to their stomachs and eat just the right amount of food to be healthy. \n  \nThe students travel through the body learning about how food and physical activity help make them healthy and strong. SUMMARY:The Big Event\, Eagle Pride City Wide
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 14\, students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni from Texas A&M University-Texarkana will show their appreciation to the Texarkana community during The Big Event: Eagle Pride City Wide\, a day of community service.  \nThis annual event for A&M-Texarkana started last year with an overwhelming show of support and volunteer participation. Participants in The Big Event complete “done-in-a-day” community service projects\, ranging from raking leaves\, washing windows\, removing debris\, cleaning closets\, spreading mulch\, painting and minor repairs\, to organizing donated goods\, participating in games and activities with senior citizens\, tutoring children and completing other proposed projects. \nMichael Stephenson\, Coordinator of Student Life and Project Manager for The Big Event said “Last year\, our inaugural event boosted over 250 volunteers from our campus community that logged nearly 1\,000 service hours. For one day\, our campus community of students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni united to extend a helping hand by performing community service on both sides of the state line.” He added “This is simply our way of showing our gratitude for the community’s unwavering support of our university.” \nThe Big Event has become somewhat of a national phenomenon at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States. It originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 when six students felt the need to give something back to the communities of College Station and Bryan\, Texas. Since that time\, more than 100 universities have joined the effort. \n“In reformatting the national event to a big\, one day event where we could unite the entire campus community\, not just students\,” said Stephenson. “At the conclusion of last year’s event\, my heart was completely full. Our campus truly made an impact on local parks\, neighborhoods\, and organizations. We look forward to serving Texarkana again this year.” Stephenson said.  \nA&M-Texarkana is now accepting applications for work sites and sponsors for The Big Event.  \n“We have great opportunities for local businesses to be a part of this event\,” Stephenson said. SUMMARY:UK Bell Ringers to Visit Texarkana
DESCRIPTION:A group of more than 30 bell ringers from the UK will be visiting Texarkana on Wednesday/Thursday\, April 11/12\, 2018\, staying at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Texarkana\, Arkansas.  They will be ringing the 8 bells at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday from about 9:30am. The group are on a tour of the South-Eastern and Southern states ringing at a total of 18 towers en route\, from Charleston in the East to Dallas in the West\, and as far South as Miami.  The party will arrive in Atlanta from the UK on 2 April and fly home from Miami on 18 April. \nThe group are all based in the UK\, ringing at a wide variety of towers in different parts of the country\, and ringing on a wide range of bell installations from the majestic ring of Exeter Cathedral\, where the largest bell weighs in at about 8000lb to some small private rings where the largest bell weighs under 2lb.  It includes people who have rung more than 1000 peals (a peal is a continuous period of ringing which usually lasts around 3 hours) and people who have rung no peals at all. All are united by a love of the interest\, companionship\, physical and technical challenges and service involved in ringing. \nTour organizer Andy Sutherland rings in Ilkley\, West Yorkshire\, in the North of England (scene of the well-known English folk song “On Ilkla Moor baht’at”)\, having learned to ring in Edinburgh\, Scotland\, nearly 40 years ago when at University.  Andy said “…this trip follows an earlier tour I organized of the North-Eastern USA and Canada in 2014\, involving many of the same people. We had such a fantastic time that I wanted to come back again\, visit and learn about the more Southerly states\, try the bells\, and sample some of the famous Southern hospitality. We’re really looking forward to our visit to Texarkana and to ringing on this fine set of bells”.

DESCRIPTION:Texarkana Independent School District will honor two of their own\, Rep. Marvin L. Abney (Dunbar High School Class of 1968) and Dr. Lanny G. Chasteen (Texas High School Class of 1960)\, as the 2018 Distinguished Alumni during events to be held on Friday\, April 6. \n  \nA Student Leadership Breakfast will be held from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at the Dan Haskins Student Center at Texas High School\, 2112 Kennedy Lane.  The event will offer leadership students from Texas Middle School and Texas High School the opportunity to hear from the honorees to learn first-hand how the example that you set for others\, and for yourself\, begins at an early age in order to build a strong foundation for personal and professional growth. \n  \nFrom 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.\, a Distinguished Alumni Luncheon will be held at the Texarkana Country Club\, #1 Country Club Drive\, where the two individuals will be presented and awarded the honor of 2018 Distinguished Alumni.  There is limited seating and reservations are required by contacting    Tina Veal-Gooch at 903.794.3651 ext. 1013. \n  \nFollowing graduation from Dunbar High School in 1968\, Rep. Marvin Abney attended Texarkana College before completing his Bachelor of Science in Public Administration at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1975.  He went on to earn a Master in Management from Webster University in 1982\, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island in 2000 and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Educational Leadership from Johnson & Wales University in 2005. \n  \nAbney served a 20-year career in the United States Army during which he completed Officer Candidate School and Airborne School.  He commanded a U.S. Detachment for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Headquarters in Brussels\, Belgium which included responsibilities at the American Embassy in Paris\, France. Abney is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and while stationed in Europe\, taught Business Law and General Business courses at City Colleges of Chicago\, European Division. \n  \nIn his professional career\, Abney served as: City Official for Newport\, Rhode Island’s Zoning Board of Review; Executive Assistant to the Rhode Island Commissioner for Secondary and Elementary Education; and\, Interim Director of Human Resources Development at the State of Rhode Island\, Department of Secondary and Elementary Education. \nHe was elected to serve the residents of Newport and Middleton\, Rhode Island in District 73 in November 2012.  In May 2016\, Abney was named as Chairman of the House of Representatives Finance Committee\, which is tasked with adopting the annual state budget.  Additionally\, he served on the House Committee for Veterans’ Affairs and sponsored successful legislation requiring the reporting of any sexual abuse of a child by an employee\, contractor or volunteer of an educational program. \n  \nDuring the 2017 legislative session\, Abney was the lead sponsor of the Fiscal Year 2018 state budget which funds the first year of a six-year phase-out of the car tax\, raises the minimum wage\, restores free bus fares for the elderly and disabled and includes a pilot program to provide two years of free tuition at the Community College of Rhode Island. \n  \nIn addition to his current duties as a legislator\, Abney serves on the Board of Incorporators for BankNewport; Board of Directors of the Redwood Library & Athenaeum; and\, Vice-Chair of the Budget and Revenue Committee of the National Council of State Legislatures. \n  \nHe has served as Vice-President on the Executive Board for the Narragansett Boy Scouts Council; President for the Newport Education Foundation; President of the Parent Teachers Association of American NATO Schools; Member of the Newport Public School’s Strategic Planning Committee;  Member for the Internal Review Board of Salve Regina University; Member of the Community College of Rhode Island Foundation Board of Trustees; Founding Member for the Board of Trustees of Newport Community School; Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center; Board of Directors for the Newport County YMCA; and\, consultant to the Annenberg Institute of School Reform at Brown University.  He was honored by the Women’s Resource Center of Newport & Bristol County as one of their “Men Who Make a Difference.” \n  \nAbney lives in Newport with his wife\, Cheryl Lynn (Amado). He is the father of sons\, Marvin L. Abney II\, Christian A. Abney (U.S. Army Major) and daughter\, Tess A. Abney. He is the grandfather of four granddaughters: Sierra\, Jade\, Mia and Dakota. \n  \nDr. Lanny G. Chasteen graduated from Texas High School in 1960 and furthered his education earning a Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of Texas at Austin\, a Master in Business Administration and a Doctorate in Accounting from the University of Arkansas.  He is a retired Certified Public Accountant in Oklahoma. \n  \nHis 39-year career in Accounting includes serving as:  Faculty for Oklahoma State University; Head of the School of Accounting for OSU; Professor Emeritus of Accounting for OSU; Lecturer in Accounting at Rice University; Faculty Resident for Haskins & Sells\, now known as Deloitte\, one of the “Big Four” accounting organizations and the largest professional services network in the world; and\, Summer Visiting Professor positions at University of Texas at Austin\, Texas Tech University\, University of Texas at Arlington and the University of Tulsa. \n  \nChasteen is the author of articles appearing in The Accounting Review\, Accounting Horizons\, Issues in Accounting Education\, Abacus\, Journal of Accountancy\, Journal of Accounting Education and other academic and professional journals.   He has served on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review\, Journal of Accounting Education and Issues in Accounting Education and has co-authored six editions of Intermediate Accounting\, the college textbook which is the standard for students and professionals in the field. \n  \nHe has held or currently holds memberships in:  Beta Gamma Sigma and Beta Alpha Psi honorary and professional societies; American Accounting Association\, American Institute of CPAs\, Oklahoma Society of CPAs\, Accounting Programs Leadership Group of the American Accounting Association\, Federation of Schools of Accountancy\, Financial Executives Institute and Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. \n  \nDr. Chasteen has received numerous honors and awards for his work.  They include:  Oklahoma Gold Medalist and Elijah Watts Sells National Honorable Mention for the CPA Examination; Department of Accounting Alumni Award from the University of Arkansas in 1988; Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants Outstanding Educator Award in 1990 and 2007; Faculty Award of Merit from the Federation of Schools of Accountancy in 1999; various teaching awards from Oklahoma State University; and\, the establishment of the Lanny G. Chasteen Endowed Chair in Accounting at OSU in 2006. \n  \nHis volunteer service includes serving on the Audit Committee for the City of Stillwater\, OK for over 20 years\, being the CROP Walk (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Representative and assorted committee appointments at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Stillwater.  Today he serves as an Usher for St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Katy\, TX and as a Home Deliverer for Meals on Wheels. \n  \nChasteen lives in Katy\, TX with his wife of 54 years\, Jane.  They have two daughters – Joey Michelle Rhodair and Jamie Lynn Pilloff\, one grandson\, Jeremy Pilloff and one granddaughter\, Julia Pilloff. \n  \nSince 1992\, TISD has sponsored a Distinguished Alumni Awards program to recognize the outstanding personal and professional achievements of their alumni.  These outstanding former Texas High School and Dunbar High School graduates are models to current and future alumni in terms of their professional\, leadership and ethical standards.  Past award recipients have been:           Truman Arnold\, Dr. Lenox Dial Baker\, Miller Barber\, Melvin Bradley\, Dr. Karen D. SUMMARY:CASA for Children Calls for More Volunteers During National Child Abuse Prevention Month
DESCRIPTION:April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month\, and CASA for Children  is raising awareness about child abuse and neglect and the need for more dedicated members of the community to step up and become CASA volunteers.  \nWhen a child is placed in the foster care system due to abuse or neglect\, they are often removed from their home and placed in state care – sometimes far away from their family\, loved ones and community. CASA volunteers\, or Court Appointed Special Advocates\, are everyday people from all walks of life who are recruited and specially trained to advocate for these children and provide a consistent\, reliable adult presence for them during a difficult time in their life. \n“In addition to the trauma they have already experienced due to the initial abuse or neglect\, foster care can take a toll on children\,” said Brandy Eldridge\, Executive Director of CASA for Children and the Texarkana Children’s Advocacy Center. “They need an advocate who will get to know them\, speak up for them and ensure their needs are met while they are in the system\, and that is what our volunteers provide.”  \nCASA volunteers are assigned to one child or sibling group to advocate for their best interest in court\, in school and in other settings. They get to know the child and everyone involved in their life\, such as family members\, foster parents\, therapists and teachers\, in order to develop a realistic picture of the child’s unique situation. They make recommendations to the judge overseeing the child’s case\, with the goal of ensuring that the child is safe and has the resources needed to heal.  \n“Even one child victim of abuse or neglect is too many\, and it is critical that we continue to raise awareness of this issue in our community and nationwide\,” said Eldridge. “But becoming a CASA volunteer is a way to take it beyond just awareness\, and do your part to help break the cycle for future generations.”    \nLocally\, CASA for Children served 375 children in the foster care system in an eight county area surrounding Texarkana in 2017\, and the Texarkana Children’s Advocacy Center served 668 (more than 1\,000 abused and neglected children served each year).  This April\, consider stepping up to make a difference for these children by becoming a CASA volunteer. \n“We at CASA for Children always hope for the day when CASA and a national month dedicated to child abuse prevention are no longer needed because all children have the safe\, loving home they deserve\,” said Eldridge. “Until then\, we will continue to seek more members of the community to join our growing movement\, and we will not rest until we can provide a CASA volunteer for every child who needs one.” \nApril is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. DESCRIPTION:Wadley Regional Medical Center will be hosting its first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Birthday Celebration on Saturday\, April 7th from 10am-12pm.  The NICU Birthday Party will be held in the front of the hospital between the Main Entrance and the Day Surgery entrance.  This is a chance to celebrate all babies who have been cared for in the Wadley NICU over the years. An invitation is warmly extended to the many patients and their families who received care in the Wadley NICU\, which was recently designated a Level II NICU in November 2017.  \n  \nThis celebration is an opportunity for families from around the Texarkana area to reunite with nurses who not only cared for their babies\, but helped the parents through an emotional and trying time.  “The staff has been the driving force behind getting this event put together\,” claims Shelby Brown\, director of marketing and planning for Wadley. “They are so excited to be able to reconnect with these very special deliveries and their families!”    \n  \nThere will be lots of games for the kids to play\, balloon animals by Daryl Miller\, hand prints\, and face painting.  To commemorate the day\, there will be a photo area for families to use their own camera. The program aids birthing facilities in improving breastfeeding outcomes through adoption of best practices. SUMMARY:The Big Event 2018
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 14\, students\, faculty\, staff and alumni from Texas A&M University-Texarkana will show their appreciation to the Texarkana community during The Big Event: Eagle Pride City Wide\, a day of community service.  \nThis annual event for A&M-Texarkana started last year with an overwhelming show of support and volunteer participation. Participants in The Big Event complete “done-in-a-day” community service projects ranging from raking leaves\, washing windows\, removing debris\, cleaning closets\, spreading mulch\, painting and minor repairs to organizing donated goods\, participating in games and activities with senior citizens\, tutoring children and completing other proposed projects. \nMichael Stephenson\, Coordinator of Student Life and Project Manager for The Big Event said “Last year\, our inaugural event boasted over 250 volunteers from our campus community that logged nearly 1\,000 service hours. For one day\, our campus community of students\, faculty\, staff\, and alumni united to extend a helping hand by performing community service on both sides of the state line.” He added\, “This is simply our way of showing our gratitude for the community’s unwavering support of our university.” \nThe Big Event has become somewhat of a national phenomenon at a number of colleges and universities throughout the United States. It originated at Texas A&M University in 1982 when six students felt the need to give something back to the communities of College Station and Bryan\, Texas. Since that time\, more than 100 universities have joined the effort. \n“We reformatted the national event to a big\, one day event\, we could unite the entire campus community\, not just students\,” said Stephenson. “At the conclusion of last year’s event\, my heart was completely full. Our campus truly made an impact on local parks\, neighborhoods\, and organizations. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kevin Rose will present The Sentient Machine: Teaching and Learning in the Age of Artificial Intelligence for the Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) at Texas A&M University-Texarkana on the Northeast Texas Community College campus\, 2886 FM1735\, Mt Pleasant\, TX.  \n  \nThe lecture will take place in the NTCC HUM 101 (the Humanities Community Room) from 12:20-1:20 PM on Tuesday\, March 20. It is free and open to the public.  \n  \nDuring the lecture\, Dr. Rose will attempt to answer the questions: What does the age of the sentient machine mean for society and learning? Will robots be able to learn faster than humans? Will they ultimately take over the humans’ roles\, and thus creating a ‘jobless future’ for the human race? What will humans need to learn if robots are the ones performing the work? \n  \nPLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students\, faculty\, staff and the community at large. SUMMARY:50th Annual Jonquil Festival at Historic Washington State Park
DESCRIPTION:Since 1969\, thousands have descended on the little town of Washington\, Arkansas to celebrate the Jonquil Festival. It originally began when Mrs. Grace Harris\, a resident of Washington\, relayed an idea to the executive director of the Pioneer Washington Restoration Foundation\, Mrs. Georgia Haynes about her idea of a special event. \nThe idea for the Jonquil Festival was this: since jonquils and daffodils had been planted by pioneer families of the area over 100 years ago\, it would be a great idea to have a regional springtime event when they are in bloom. \nTogether\, with nature showing off her beautiful showmanship of flora and the aesthetic allure of the historic homes of early Washington\, a festival was born. Originally\, the festival was called the Jonquil and Daffodil Trail and lasted 8 days. \nThe name change from the Jonquil and Daffodil Trail to the Jonquil Festival happened in 1972 and in 1976 the festival was changed from lasting 8 days to 3. \nIn 1978\, more than 5\,000 King Alfred bulbs were imported from Holland and added to the already existing jonquils and daffodils in the historic town making it even more vibrant. \nToday\, 50 jonquil festivals later\, we still celebrate the idea put together by Mrs. Grace Harris and have continued to strive to host\, what we at the park think as\, the premier festival in southwest Arkansas. \nSo\, join us March 16th-18th\, for our 50th annual Jonquil Festival. The festival begins at 9 a.m. all three days and ends at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tours of the park will be regular price and parking is $5. DESCRIPTION:The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana will hold a sushi making class in the Hempstead Hall Kitchen on Thursday\, March 8 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost for the class is $30\, and the class is limited to 15 participants. The class will be taught by Ian Sanderson. Sanderson is a graduate of the Pulaski Technical College Culinary School and the Sous Chef at the 1836 Club in Little Rock\, Arkansas. \n  \nThe class will cover rice\, vegetable\, and protein preparation\, and fish selection. Participants will learn how to roll the maki (sushi rolls) in a variety of ways. Also included are lessons to prepare nigiri\, a pressed rice ball with fish over the top. \n  \n“If you are constantly craving sushi\, a sushi making class will teach you the skills you need to enjoy a roll whenever you please. DESCRIPTION:The Schmieding Home Caregiver Training Program of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will hold a free family caregiver workshop March 21 for those who would like to learn about caring for an adult with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. \n  \nThe workshop\, which is open to the public\, will be held 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the UAMS Texarkana Regional Center on Aging\, 4010 Jefferson Avenue in Texarkana. For more information or to register\, please call (870) 773-2030. Pastries\, coffee and water will be provided. Space is limited. \n  \nThe Center on Aging is part of the UAMS Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging. \n  \nThe program is sponsored by UAMS’ Arkansas Geriatric Education Collaborative and AARP Arkansas. The collaborative is funded by a Health Resources and Services Administration grant of $2.4 million for a Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program. \n  \nTaught by Stacy Hatfield\, R.N.\, the workshop will present an overview of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and provide caregiving tips that maintain respect\, dignity and quality of life for the person living with dementia. Information will also be presented on nutrition\, behavior\, communication techniques and activities. \n  \nAbout 452\,000 family caregivers in Arkansas provide an estimated $4.7 billion in unpaid care each year\, helping their loved ones with bathing and dressing\, cooking meals\, transportation\, finances and complex medical tasks like wound care and injections. \n  \nAARP Arkansas State Director Herb Sanderson said support for family caregivers\, including making available free training opportunities\, represents a top priority for AARP\, which has more than 310\,000 members in Arkansas age 50 or older. \n  \n“Family caregivers are the backbone of our care system\, serving a crucial role in helping older Arkansans and other loved ones remain in their own homes and communities\,” Sanderson said. “Because of their tireless efforts\, older parents\, spouses\, and other loved ones are able to live independently at home and in the community — where they want to be. DESCRIPTION:The University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana will hold the 12 th Annual Beads\, Bags\, and Bangles Kids’ College fundraiser on Thursday\, March 1\, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Hope Municipal Airport in Hope\, Arkansas. \nThe theme of this year’s event is “The Bicentennial Bash\,” in celebration of the 200-year anniversary of Hempstead County. \nAre you feeling lucky? Featured events this year will include casino games\, live music\, a special tasting event\, exclusive shopping\, heavy hors d’oeuvres\, a live auction\, and more. This event is sure to be one that people will remember for the next 200 years. \nProceeds raised at the 12th Annual BBB event will be used for scholarships and supplies to benefit the 2018 Kids’ College and Camp Save-A- Life programs. These programs are designed for students who will be in first through eighth grade. The 2017 programs served over 250 children from Hope\, Texarkana\, and the surrounding communities.
