Texas A&M University-Texarkana will host its first ever Advanced Placement Summer Institutes this summer on the Bringle Lake Campus. The workshops, geared towards high school teachers, are scheduled for June 26-29 and July 17-20.
Advanced Placement (AP) Summer Institutes provide teachers with at least 30 hours of pedagogical and content-rich training designed to strengthen how they teach AP courses. College Board-endorsed consultants guide the participants through a number of College Board resources, including course outlines, content-related handouts, student samples, scoring guidelines and commentary from the most recent AP Exam free-response questions.
AP Summer Institute (APSI) training must be completed before school districts are allowed to offer Advanced Placement courses. Upon completion of the APSI training the participants receive an Advanced Placement Certificate, which serves as their national accreditation to teach Advance Placement courses.
“Hosting an AP Summer Institute in Texarkana allows us to provide valuable teacher preparation in a professional environment and prepare educators to guide students towards a successful college experience,” said Shelley Caraway, Executive Director of Extended Education at TAMUT. “Meeting the professional development needs of our K-12 educators is core to our mission of providing the highest quality continuing education possible.”
The June workshops include Chemistry, English Language and Literature, English Literature and Composition, European History, Physics I, US History, World History, Art History, Biology, Calculus AB and BC combined, Computer Science A and English Language and Composition.
The July workshops include English Language and Literature, English Literature and Composition, Government and Politics-US, Psychology, Spanish Language and Culture, US History and World History.
The cost for the institutes, which run Tuesday through Friday, is $525 before April 15 and increases to $575 after that date. AP, TEA and Region 8 scholarships are available, but each workshop is limited to 30 participants. For more information about scholarships or registration please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
