Officials and business leaders from Louisiana and Arkansas were in attendance of a ribbon cutting on the two states border opening Interstate 49.

Curt Green, president of the I-49 International Coalition, who has been working to get funding for I-49 since the mid 1980’s said “this is a major step in the future of our cities, particularly when you realize Interstate 49 connects 12 different states.”

This completes the section of Interstate 49 from Texarkana to Shreveport.

Eventually the road will go from New Orleans, Louisiana to Winnipeg,  Canada but there is no timeframe for when construction will begin to finish the Interstate due to lack of federal funding.

The longest unfinished section is the approximately 140 miles between Texarkana and Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
