Texarkana, Texas police responded to Wadley Hospital Monday morning at 5:30 after a Texarkana, Arkansas man accidentally shot himself with a stolen handgun. Upon their arrival, officers found Dakota Young, 18, being treated for a gunshot wound to his buttocks. Young initially told police that he was shot while walking in the 1100 block of Pine Street by an unknown suspect.

According to police a witness who was with Young at the time of the shooting led officers to the 1100 block of Olive Street where they located a .38 caliber revolver. It soon became apparent that Young was not being truthful after evidence gathered at the crime scene coupled with the nature of the gunshot wound led the officers to believe it was self-inflicted. Young then recanted and admitted to shooting himself.

The revolver and a cellular phone, which was in Young’s possession, were both reported stolen from a vehicle in the 100 block of Olive Street in Texarkana, Arkansas. The case is still under investigation and criminal charges may be filed after his release from the hospital.
