A Bowie County grand jury indicted a Redwater, Texas, man Wednesday accused of beating his mother with a baseball bat and slitting her throat.
Dakoda Leeves Dodd, 22, became the subject of a manhunt after a guest of Dodd’s mother at her Redwater home called 911, according to a probable cause affidavit. The caller and another house guest reported they were awakened the morning of April 23 to the noise of the woman’s cries. A metal baseball bat laid near the woman’s injured body but the means by which the woman’s throat was cut is unknown.
Dodd’s mother allegedly told her house guests it was her son who brutally assaulted her. Bowie County Sheriff’s Office deputies launched a manhunt which included the use of Texas Department of Criminal Justice tracking hounds and the assistance of other local law enforcement. A BCSO helicopter crew spotted Dodd near Redwater on railroad tracks.
Dodd’s mother was flown to LSU Medical Center in Louisiana for treatment. Medical personnel advised that she suffered multiple skull fractures and a lacerated throat.
Dodd was indicted Wednesday for aggravated assault, family violence, with serious bodily injury. He faces five to 99 years or life in prison. He is currently being held in the Bowie County jail. Bail is set at $100,000.
