July 13, 2026

TEXARKANA, Texas — The Texarkana Independent School District Board of Trustees announced today that Superintendent Dr. Doug Brubaker has accepted the position of Superintendent of Chesapeake Public Schools in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Dr. Brubaker will continue to support the Board during the transition period as they begin the process for identifying the district’s next superintendent.

“It has been one of the greatest honors of my career to serve the students, staff, families, and community of Texarkana ISD,” Dr. Brubaker said. “This community has welcomed my family, contributed to my growth as a leader, and reminded me every day why public education matters. While I am excited for this new role, leaving Texarkana is very difficult. I will always be grateful for the relationships we’ve built together and for the opportunity to serve this remarkable district.”

Board President Amy Bowers expressed gratitude for Dr. Brubaker’s leadership.

“On behalf of the Texarkana ISD Board of Trustees, we congratulate Dr. Brubaker on this well-deserved opportunity. We are grateful for his leadership, his commitment to our students, and the positive impact he has made on our district. His vision has helped position Texarkana ISD for continued success, and while we will miss him, we wish him and his family nothing but the very best in this next chapter.”

Vice President Paul Miller echoed those sentiments.

“Leadership is measured not only by accomplishments but also by the relationships built along the way. Dr. Brubaker has led with integrity, compassion, and a focus on students. We thank him for his service to Texarkana ISD and are confident the strong foundation established during his leadership will continue to benefit our district for years to come.”

Since joining the district in January 2021, Dr. Brubaker’s tenure has been defined by historic investments in TISD’s students, staff, and infrastructure. Most notably, he championed the effort to pass and execute a $189 million bond program, delivering key projects like a new Pre-K center and a high school career and technology center on time and under budget.

Under his leadership, TISD achieved a tenfold increase in the number of students graduating high school with an associate’s degree, while the district’s STEM-focused elementary school earned a #3 overall ranking statewide by U.S. News & World Report in 2025. Dr. Brubaker also prioritized deep community roots, leading a five-year strategic plan shaped by over 2,000 hours of stakeholder collaboration. He was honored by the Texarkana Area NAACP with the prestigious Benjamin Dennis President’s Award in 2025.

In the coming weeks, Dr. Brubaker will continue his work with Texarkana ISD to support the Board as they develop transition plans and begin the process for identifying the district’s next superintendent. The Board is committed to ensuring a seamless transition and maintaining uninterrupted support for students, staff, and families.

“Texarkana ISD is positioned for continued success,” Dr. Brubaker added. “The strength of this district has always been its people: our dedicated educators, staff, students, families, and community partners. I leave knowing that the district will continue to excel and expand opportunities for our students because of the dedicated team that serves them every day.”
