A man who molested a young girl related to his ex-wife was sentenced to 45 years in prison Thursday following a jury trial in Bowie County.

Johnathan Edward Williams, 36, was married to an older relative of the girl when he began touching her sexually when she was about 8 years old in 2000, according to a probable cause affidavit. The victim, who is now 26, reported the abuse in January 2018 to the sexual assault coordinator of Texarkana Domestic Violence Prevention Program.

A jury of five women and seven men sentenced Williams to 30 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a child and 15 years on each of two counts of indecency with a child by sexual contact. First Assistant District Attorney Kelley Crisp said 202nd District Judge John Tidwell ordered the two 15-year sentences to run concurrently to each other but consecutively to the 30-year sentence, for a total 45 years behind bars.

The victim testified that Williams told her she was beautiful and prettier than his wife. Williams told the girl the sexual contact between them was okay because he loved her though he warned her not to tell anyone because he would go to jail and their families would suffer.

Williams must register as a sex offender.
