Man extradited, charged in Marion County officer-involved shooting; second inmate charged with murder in separate case

JEFFERSON, Texas – The man accused of opening fire on Marion County deputies last month has been returned to Texas and booked into the Marion County Jail, and a second man is facing a murder charge in a deadly June shooting, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office announced this week.

Robert Paul Landrum was booked into the Marion County Jail on July 8 after his extradition was finalized with Caddo Parish Correctional in Louisiana, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Landrum is charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a public servant in connection with a June 24 officer-involved shooting.

That incident began around 7:15 p.m. June 24 when Marion County deputies responded to a domestic disturbance in the 2700 block of Highway 49. When deputies arrived, authorities said, a man discharged a rifle and struck a marked Marion County patrol unit.

Additional deputies and a Texas game warden responded to assist. The sheriff’s office said the man refused commands to drop the firearms, and when he raised the weapons in the direction of officers, a Marion County deputy fired his weapon, striking him.

The man was taken into custody and flown by medical helicopter to LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, which accounts for his time in Louisiana custody before extradition back to Marion County.

The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting, and the sheriff’s office said no additional information will be released while that investigation continues. The department thanked its partner agencies for their assistance.

In the second case, Xavier Lakeno Zachery is charged with murder in a June 29 shooting on FM 248 that killed Caycen Nolan Mutai, according to the sheriff’s office.

Marion County deputies, Jefferson police officers and Texas DPS troopers responded to reports of the shooting just before 8 p.m. that evening. Mutai was pronounced dead at the scene, and one person was arrested. Zachery remains in the Marion County Jail, where records included in the release indicate he has been held since the night of the shooting.

The Texas Rangers are assisting the sheriff’s office with that investigation, and officials said no further information will be released while the case is ongoing.
