Police Investigate Suspicious Death

TEXARKANA, TEXAS – The Texarkana Texas Police Department is investigating the suspicious death of Anthony Ray Mathis, 54, of Texarkana Texas on January 4.

Officers were dispatched to an assist the ambulance call at the Randy Sams Outreach Shelter, 402 W. 4th Street, at 3:30 last Friday afternoon. When they arrived, emergency medical personnel were performing CPR on Mathis in the lobby. Mathis was transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center and pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival.

According to witnesses, two men and a woman pulled into the Randy Sams parking lot in a white SUV, believed to be a Hyundai Santa Fe. After one man unloaded a wheelchair from the back of the vehicle, the other man placed Mathis, who was obviously unconscious, in the wheelchair. The men pushed Mathis into the lobby, attempted to prop him up in the wheelchair, and then left in their vehicle without any explanation. Witnesses removed Mathis from the wheelchair to provide medical aid and called 9-1-1.

Mathis’ body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy.

Detective continue to investigate Mathis’ death and are currently searching for the three unknown people in the vehicle who drove him to the Randy Sams Shelter.
