School officials from Arkansas High, Ashdown, Blevins, Fouke, Genoa, Hope, Lafayette County, Nevada, Prescott, and Spring Hill School Districts met today at Hempstead Hall to discuss opportunities for students at the new Secondary Career & Technical Education Center at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana (UAHT).
The UAHT Secondary Career & Technical Education (CTE) Center is an area secondary career center located on U of A Texarkana Campus, Arkansas High School Campus in Texarkana, and the U of A Hope Campus. The Center provides
area high school juniors and seniors with the unique opportunity to earn college credit while still in high school at no charge. The center’s curriculum serves as an extension of the high school curriculum offerings by providing students with
hands-on experiences in a variety of career fields taught by UAHT Faculty.
Areas of study in the Center will include:
Industrial Equipment Technologies
Medical Professions – General Health Option
Medical Professions – Certified Nursing Assistant Option
Welding Technology
Students will also have the opportunity to graduate high school with certificates of proficiency in the following:
Certificate of Proficiency in Industrial Maintenance Technology
Certificate of Proficiency in Certified Nursing Assistant
Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Welding
According to recent studies, in Arkansas, students who concentrated in a CTE program of study were 21 percentage points more likely to graduate from high school than their peers. In addition, 91% of parents of CTE students were satisfied with the way CTE helps their children get a leg up on their future careers, and 78% of CTE concentrators enroll in postsecondary education full-time immediately after graduating high school.
Prospective students apply for admission to the UAHT Secondary Career & Technical Education Center programs through their local high school counselors. Please see your high school counselor as soon as possible to sign up for fall
classes.
