Father of PGA pro dies of self-inflicted gunshot wound

635750659557619922-AP-HURLEY-S-FATHER-74856209Dad of Golfer Billy Hurley III has died of a self inflicted gunshot wound nearly a month after turning up in Texas, according to a statement from Hurley’s management company.

According to Leesburg Police Willard Hurley Jr., 61, stayed the night of July 23 at a Texarkana, Texas, hotel.  A few days later he was found in a public library in Clarksville, Texas.  He told police at the time he was traveling.

According to Hurley’s church it was discovered yesterday that Bill died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while apparently on his way back to Virginia.

“I want to thank the PGA Tour, the greater golf media and all those who provided their support, prayers and encouragement,” Hurley said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Billy and his loved ones during this very difficult time,” PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement.
