LifeShare Blood Center Faces Critical Shortage Following Winter Storm Closures

Recent winter weather has created a critical blood and platelet shortage at LifeShare Blood Center, affecting hospitals across the Texarkana region.

Inclement conditions forced temporary donor center closures and canceled blood drives, significantly reducing collections at a time when hospitals typically see increased patient needs. The shortage is particularly acute for platelets, which have a shelf life of just five to seven days and are essential for cancer patients, trauma victims, and those undergoing complex surgeries.

“Winter months are always challenging for the blood supply, but weather-related disruptions make it even more difficult,” said Mandi Johnson, Director of Community Engagement for LifeShare Blood Center. “Patient needs don’t pause for winter storms, and hospitals rely on us to have lifesaving products available every day.”

While all blood donations are needed, LifeShare is especially seeking platelet donations. Unlike whole blood donations, platelets can only be donated in-center and require specialized equipment and staff. Donors not already approved for platelet donation may need to complete a brief screening, including testing for certain antibodies, before becoming eligible.

Red blood cells can be stored for up to 42 days, but the short shelf life of platelets means even missing a single day of collections can directly impact hospital supplies.

LifeShare encourages eligible donors to schedule appointments at www.lifeshare.org/give or by calling 800-256-5433. The Texarkana donor center is located at 4020 Summerhill Road.
