Woman Accused Of Stealing From Friend Instead Of Posting Her Bail

HEMPSTEAD COUNTY, Ark–A Nashville, Ark., woman facing a fraud charge in
Hempstead County allegedly used an incarcerated friend’s debit card to make
over $1,300 in ATM withdrawals and purchases instead of bonding her
locked-up friend out of jail.

Jennifer Roberts, 37, aka Jennifer Jones, had allegedly agreed to help a
friend after she was arrested late last year, according to a probable cause
affidavit. A woman in jail gave Roberts permission to retrieve her debit
card and make a withdrawal for the $1,040 it would take for her to be
released from the Hempstead County jail.

When her bail was not posted, the woman called her bank and learned that 39
unauthorized charges and ATM withdrawals totaling over $1,300 had been made
from her account, the affidavit said.

The woman reported the theft while in the Hempstead County jail. An
investigator with the Hope Police Dept. collected video surveillance
footage in November which allegedly showed Roberts using her jailed
friend’s card on Oct. 11 at an ATM at a Walmart in Hope. While at the store
on the same day, Roberts allegedly used a card in her own name to buy items
from the same Walmart, according to the affidavit.

Roberts faces up to six years in prison, a fine up to $10,000, or both if
convicted of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card.
