The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be closing Farm-to-Market Road 559 (Richmond Road) this weekend just south of Wamba to replace some failing culverts under the roadway.
“There are four old clay culverts that are beginning to crumble under the highway about 0.4 mile south of FM 1397. We have awarded an emergency contract to replace the clay culverts with stronger concrete culverts,” said Jason Dupree, Director of Operations for TxDOT in Atlanta.

The highway will be closed about 8 p.m. on Friday, June 12, and the work will take an estimated 48 hours to complete, if all things go well. The work was planned for the weekend in order to have less of an impact on traffic.

Traffic will be detoured around FM 1397 (Summerhill Road) to the east and FM 2253 through Leary to the west. Motorists traveling through the area should plan on taking alternate routes to their location and allow additional travel time to get to their destination.

Portable message boards have been placed on the highway to warn motorists of the impending closure this weekend.

Anyone having questions about the work or detour routes can contact the Texarkana TxDOT Area Office at 903-838-8574.
