Southwest Center to host diabetes education series

diabetesThe City of Texarkana, Texas, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Texarkana-Bowie County Family Health Center are partnering to offer a healthy living/diabetes self-management and education series September 23rd through October 21st, 2014.

The class is open to all adults age 18 and older who are diagnosed or at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes, has a family history of diabetes, has a history of hypertension, high cholesterol or heart disease, are overweight or obese, or who are interested in healthy lifestyle options. The class is limited to 15 participants and registration will close on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.

The class will be taught by Texarkana-Bowie County Health Center public educator and registered nurse, Rebecca Sanford.

“This class will give residents an opportunity to learn the basics of heart disease and diabetes risk factors,” Sanford said. “We’ll discuss the basics of healthy eating, and healthy cooking options and how small lifestyle changes can make a big difference.”

This series of group classes will meet on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at the Southwest Center at 3222 W. 7th Street. For more information contact Rebecca Sanford at (903) 798-3250 or emailing rebecca.sanford@txkusa.org.
