Texarkana College Board of Trustees met today to consider the appointment of a trustee to fill the Place 7 at-large board vacancy. After reviewing letters of interest received from four Bowie County residents, TC Trustees approved the appointment of George Moore to serve until the next TC Trustee election is held in November 2018. The vacancy on the board came as a result of Trustee Terry Taylor’s resignation on April 24, 2017. Letters of interest were received from Charles Jordan, George E. Moore, James Anthony Morris, and R.E. Ruffin.
“Mr. Moore was selected to serve as a trustee on the TC Board today because of his lifelong service as an educator, community leader and role model for young people in the Texarkana community,” said Kyle Davis, TC board president. “His spirit, enthusiasm and civic involvement is a great fit for TC’s Board. His work as a servant leader, both as a professional educator and a community member, provides the breadth of knowledge needed to step into this position. We are pleased to welcome him onto the Board.”
Davis said the quality of applicants was impressive and Trustees were glad to see such strong interest in serving the College.
“We are grateful for those who submitted letters of interest and their passion of wanting to foster a college-going culture in our community.” Davis said. “The applications were all very strong and showed a great deal of commitment to student success and support of providing affordable and accessible higher education opportunities for our region.”
In other business, Trustees approved revisions to the institutional strategic plan that were discussed at the Board’s planning retreat held in April 2017.
“Overall, our mission remains to advance our community through attainable higher education and lifelong learning,” said TC president, James Henry Russell. “However, since we first adopted the 2016-2018 strategic plan, we’ve seen a need to narrow our effort on boosting student success to initiatives that help with student persistence and completion. This focus aligns with the state’s Higher Education Strategic Plan of 60x30TX.”
The revised plan now includes the full implementation of the institution’s Quality Enhancement Plan, CONNECT: Start Smart- Finish Strong, providing all students with a robust first year experience, a designated faculty advisor and access to a structured pathway tool to better guide them through their higher education journey. The institution’s core vision and belief statements were updated to include an emphasis on excellence in classroom instruction with a goal of investing in upgraded classroom equipment to assure students have access to the highest level of technology. In addition, the revised plan includes a commitment to expand the College’s data dashboard to help monitor student persistence and completion, and plan improvements based on results.
