A woman who claims she was injured during a staircase fall at Texarkana Country Club in January filed a lawsuit last week in Miller County.

Kathryn Shumate of Texarkana, Texas, claims the heel of her shoe caught on a “crevice” caused by wear and tear on stairs at the country club Jan. 16. Shumate alleges that in addition to failing to maintain the stairs, the club negligently failed to outfit the stairs with a hand rail which would have given her something to break her fall as she tripped walking down the stairs.

The suit alleges Shumate suffered “severe personal injuries” which required medical treatment. With the help of Texarkana attorney Mark Burgess, Shumate filed a personal injury complaint Friday in Miller County Circuit Court.

Shumate is seeking to recover damages for her past and future medical expenses related to the injuries she allegedly suffered at the club Jan. 16. Shumate is also asking the court to award a judgment for past and future lost wages, loss of earning capacity, past and future mental anguish and past and future pain and suffering.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Carlton Jones. Texarkana Country Club has not filed a response to Shumate’s complaint.
