Houston Texans Linked With Surprise Los Angeles Chargers Trade

Fresh off the back of successive post-season finishes, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is seeking to improve his roster. This has led to surprise speculation that he’s considering a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers, who the Texans defeated 32-12 in the Wild Card playoffs last time around.

Ryans is looking to improve his offensive line and is linked with a move for Trey Pipkins III, a move that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. The Texans opted to trade out Laremy Tunsil a couple of months ago, a decision that may have made financial sense but now looks like something of a mistake.

Chargers fans who feel that DeMeco Ryans is moving the organization in the right direction and feel another run into the playoffs is on the cards may want to back their team with a potentially lucrative bet. The Texans finished the 2024 regular season with a 10-7 record before dumping out the Chargers and then facing the Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional playoffs, going down 14-23 in what was another solid season for DeMeco Ryans.

The 40-year-old took over at the NRG Stadium in 2023, having played for five years with the team as a linebacker. He has an overall record of 20-14 in what is his first head coaching role in the NFL.

As far as a move to bring in a frankly decidedly average addition in the shape of Trey Pipkins III, Pro Football Network’s Brandon Austin has stated.

“Pipkins, formerly the Chargers’ starting RT, shifted to right guard last season after the team selected Joe Alt with the No. 5 overall pick. Now, with Los Angeles bringing in Mekhi Becton, likely to fill that RG spot, Pipkins may find himself on the outside looking in once again,”

“Over the past two seasons, Pipkins has started 46 games and brings valuable versatility with experience at both tackle spots and right guard. That combination, along with his age (just 28), makes him a viable trade candidate heading into a contract year.” Austin posted.

As for players who are joining DeMeco Ryans, four-time Pro Bowl pick, running back Nick Chubb has been brought in, with the Houston Texans coach completing the acquisition of the 29-year-old.

Chubb joins on a one-year deal worth $5 million, having spent the past seven seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He has made just ten starts over the past two seasons, securing a paltry total of four touchdowns in the process. In 2020 and 2022, he hit a career-high of 12 touchdowns, and offers Ryans a new experienced option to his roster.

The Browns’ owners, Dee and Jimmy Haslam, paid tribute to Chubb following his exit, stating warmly.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank Nick Chubb for all he’s done for the Cleveland Browns.”

“For the last seven years, Nick gave everything he had to our fans, this organization and this city. He always represented our team as the consummate professional and in a manner that showed his passion and love for the game of football.” the pair stated.

Knee and foot injuries have held Chubb back in recent seasons, but DeMeco Ryans will hope to get the most out of a player with undoubted talent in 2025.
