Bowie County Commissioner’s Court will hold a meeting Monday, October 27, 2014 at 10 am in the courthouse in New Boston.
At this meeting, the court is scheduled to vote on Judge Lacy’s recent appointment of Justice of the Peace Stephen Young as temporary Justice of the Peace for Precinct 7. Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct recently suspended Patrick James due to his federal indictment for conspiracy to commit an offense against and to defraud the U.S. government and theft of government property or money.
According to the Texas Association of Counties, “[j]ustices of the peace hear misdemeanor cases punishable by fine only and can hear most civil cases in which the amount in controversy does not exceed $10,000.”
“The justice of the peace also performs the functions of a magistrate and conducts inquests. In addition, a justice of the peace may issue warrants for search and arrest. Justices of the peace also issue civil process, conduct preliminary hearings, administer oaths, perform marriages and serve as a coroner in counties where there is no medical examiner.”
