Cult leader Tony Alamo died in a federal prison Wednesday evening.

Widely regarded as a cult, Tony Alamo Christian Ministries has been at the center of a number of lawsuits and government actions, and its leader has been jailed on a variety of charges, including income tax evasion, the theft of his late wife’s body, and taking underage girls across state lines for sex.

Alamo was convicted in 2009 of ten counts of transporting minors across state lines for sexual purposes for using his influence to force children as young as 8 into marriages and sexual relationships.

Alamo, whose real name is Bernie Lazar Hoffman, was recently listed as being in the Federal Medical Center, Butner, a federal prison in North Carolina for male inmates of all security levels who have special health needs.
