A suspect who was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing items from Texarkana College died overnight at Wadley hospital.

On Thursday afternoon, August 29, 2019, officers of the Texarkana College Police Department were involved in a foot pursuit of a suspect possibly involved in prior thefts on campus. The suspect, who was later identified as Darren Corneilus Boykin, age 23 of Dayton, OH, was apprehended by TCPD officers, and transported to Bi-State Justice Center by officers of the Texarkana Texas Police Department who arrived at the scene after the suspect was taken into custody to assist TCPD.

The suspect was then transported to Wadley Regional Medical Center after suffering from a medical event. Boykin died Thursday evening at the hospital.

According to Texarkana College, “TCPD reported the incident to the Texas Rangers for investigation, which is standard procedure in this type of situation. The investigation is ongoing.”

Boykin, who was not a TC student, fit the description of a person who had been identified on campus security cameras as a theft suspect for two separate incidents on TC property. Footage taken from security cameras had been shared with college officials and other local law enforcement agencies.

A TC administrator noticed Boykin, who met the description from security camera footage, entering a building on campus Thursday afternoon and notified the TC police. When police approached Boykin for questioning and proof of identification, he pushed away from officers and fled on foot.
