Members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity presented a $5,000 check to the Texarkana College Foundation for the Robert A. Jones Scholarship Fund in the lobby of the Nelson Administration Building at 2:00pm today.

“Robert Jones is an important member of our group and has done so much for our community,” said Fred Webb, Sr.,* President of the Kappa Gamma Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. “We are so pleased that our fraternity can give back to our local students though his scholarship fund.”

Texarkana College president Dr. Jason Smith said he is grateful for the support from the Fraternity in helping to honor Jones through the donation.

“Mr. Jones serves as TC’s Dean of Students and his mentorship has helped countless students reach their personal and academic goals,” said Smith. “Today’s gift will help even more students achieve their dreams and reach their full potential.”

During the check presentation ceremony, Jones said that joining Alpha Phi Alpha over 46 years ago was one of the most pivotal decisions he made for his life as a young man.

“My fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, has made a huge difference in my life, and in so many others, by supporting the dreams of young people and helping with projects such as this scholarship fund,” said Jones. “We have fraternity brothers around the nation who have been very successful in their careers due to the leadership and mentorship training received through our organization. I am so grateful to be a part of this group, and for my fraternity brothers who have shown their support by helping build up this special Texarkana College scholarship fund named in my honor.”

The scholarship was established earlier this year by the Texarkana College Black Student Association (BSA) in which Jones serves as the organization’s sponsor and advisor. The purpose of the fund, once fully endowed within the TC Foundation, will be to award scholarships to African American students pursuing degrees or certificates at Texarkana College.

Community members or civic groups, students or student groups, or members of the TC faculty and staff are invited to make additional and on-going contributions to the fund. The Texarkana College Foundation will continue to receive contributions to the fund as it grows toward full endowment of $25,000.
