There is only one week left to sign up for Texarkana events that are part of the Great American Smokeout and America Recycles Day.
“These are both great events for our community to join in, and we’re glad to be working with other organizations to host these events together,” said Brandy Chewning, Texarkana, Ark., recycling coordinator.
This is the third year for Texarkana, Ark., to participate in America Recycles Day, and this year a duct tape boat race will give residents the chance to learn about recycling. The boats must be made from recovered materials and, following the race, all the materials will be recycled.
The Great American Smoke-out is a pledge drive for residents wanting to learn more about the risks of tobacco use. A 5k walk/run will be held in conjunction with the boat race. The Cold Turkey Trot is intended to raise awareness about tobacco use in the community.
According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States.
All these events are free to enter, and registration is available at www.eventbrite.com, by searching Whatever Floats Your Boat Community Health Day.
