Wednesday evening Bowie County Sheriff James Prince presented Deputy Danny French with the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions during an encounter with armed suspect who engaged him in gunfire.

A DeKalb, Texas police officer responded to a disturbance call in the 200 block of Pecan in DeKalb around 1:00 a.m. August 11, 2014. 64 year old Eddie Davis opened fire from his home.

After ordering Davis to drop the weapon multiple times he opened fire on the officers. Coleman and Deputy French returned fire from behind a patrol vehicle. During the exchange, officer Coleman was shot in the left leg and Davis was fatally shot

“What happened that night was an extremely bad situation,” said Sheriff Prince. “You did an outstanding job. You are a true hero in my book,” prince told French at the ceremony.

Coleman has recovered and is back on duty with DeKalb Police Department.
