Dr. Kenny Haskin, City Manager of Texarkana, Ark., has announced his hiring of Kayla Tucker as interim director at the Animal Care & Adoption Center.

A press release says that Kayla has been volunteering at the shelter for some time and brings additional experience to the table through her employment with pet stores and shelters, some of which was in a supervisory capacity, and through volunteer work with other shelters, rescue groups, and wildlife organizations.

“She has a strong background in all phases of animal care, from management and record-keeping to actual care, including grooming,” the release states.

In a press release Tucker says, “My goals include making immediate changes to ensure the shelter is on the right path for the well-being of animals, concentrating on proper training for all staff, and making the shelter a welcome, friendly, and clean place to visit. I would like to see shelter staff and members of our community come together to make our area a better place for all who live here. I ask that citizens have patience; you can expect to see positive changes beginning in the very near future.”

The previous director Charles Lokey resigned last week due to health issues. The city had been conducting an administrative investigation after Candis Fricks accused the shelter of euthanizing her dog after making arrangements to pick it up from the shelter.
