Two members of the Texas A&M University-Texarkana Texas Beta Alpha chapter of Alphi Chi National College Honor Society recently presented their research findings at the organization’s national conference in Louisville, Kentucky.
Alana Briley, a senior biology major from Texarkana, Texas, presented in the molecular/cellular biology session with a paper titled “The Quest for Flawless Skin: How Safe Are Skin Lightening Agents?”
Allison C. Johnson, a senior English and history major from Texarkana, Texas, presented in the art/music/dance session with a paper titled “Death, Duality and Deconstruction: The Lively Lyrics of Conor Oberst.”
“Both presented excellent research papers and worked closely with professors here at A&M-Texarkana to produce their work,” said Dr. Doug Julien, associate professor of English and Alphi Chi adviser at A&M-Texarkana.
During the conference, Johnson received a $3,000 H.Y. Benedict Fellowship awarded in recognition of her research paper on the musical “Hamilton” titled “A Great Unfinished Symphony: Author-Sacrifice in the Modern Musical and the Unique Case of Hamilton.”
The A&M-Texarkana Texas Alpha Beta chapter nominated Johnson for the honor, one of only 26 fellowships and scholarships awarded from applicants throughout the nation.
“Dr. Julien is one of those professors who makes a lasting impact on students’ lives whether it’s through his classroom teaching or his leadership of Alpha Chi,” said Dr. Del Doughty, dean of the College of Education and Liberal Arts. “He’s got a wonderful ability to help a student develop her work to new levels of sophistication, as is evidenced by our students’ achievements at this year’s national conference.”
Alpha Chi inducts no more than the top 10 percent of juniors, seniors and graduate/professional students on each campus, representing all academic disciplines. With some 300 chapters and an active presence in almost every state, Alpha Chi actively promotes academic excellence, undergraduate and graduate research, campus academic dialogue and civic engagement.
