Temperature to Drop Well Below Freezing | Hard Freeze Warning Issued

The National Weather Service in Shreveport, La. has issued a hard freeze warning for Bowie and Miller counties.

According to the weather service arctic high pressure will build south into our region today which will result in gusty northerly winds. This even will spill the coldest air so far this winter southward into our region. Temperature are expected to fall below freezing across much of the region and well into the teens by early Thursday morning.

Northerly winds will increase to 15-20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Temperature will drop below freezing this evening and should not climb above 20 degree until mid morning Thursday.

Ensure that all pets have a warm place tonight and that exposed pipes are covered and sensitive vegetation is protected.

* EVENT… ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD SOUTH INTO THE REGION TODAY… WITH A TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT RESULTING IN GUSTY NORTHERLY WINDS. THIS WILL ALSO SPILL THE COLDEST AIR SO FAR THIS WINTER SEASON SOUTHWARD… WITH TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO FALL BELOW FREEZING ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION THIS EVENING… AND WELL INTO THE TEENS AREAWIDE BY DAYBREAK THURSDAY.
* TIMING… NORTHERLY WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 15 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 30 MPH AFTER 9 AM AND CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY. TEMPERATURES WILL FALL BELOW FREEZING ACROSS MUCH OF THE REGION EARLY THIS EVENING… AND NOT CLIMB BACK ABOVE 20 DEGREES UNTIL MID MORNING THURSDAY.
* IMPACT… BOATERS SHOULD EXERCISE CAUTION ON AREA LAKES DUE TO ROUGH CHOP. IN ADDITION… PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO THESE VERY COLD TEMPERATURES CAN CAUSE FROSTBITE. KEEP AN EYE ON THE ELDERLY… AS THEY CAN BE VERY VULNERABLE TO THESE DANGEROUSLY COLD TEMPERATURES. ENSURE THAT EXPOSED PIPES ARE COVERED AND SENSITIVE VEGETATION IS PROTECTED. IF POSSIBLE… BRING PETS INDOORS OR GIVE THEM A WARM PLACE TO STAY.

A LAKE WIND ADVISORY INDICATES THAT WINDS WILL CAUSE ROUGH CHOP ON AREA LAKES. SMALL BOATS WILL BE ESPECIALLY PRONE TO CAPSIZING.
A HARD FREEZE WARNING MEANS SUB-FREEZING TEMPERATURES ARE IMMINENT OR HIGHLY LIKELY. THESE CONDITIONS WILL KILL CROPS AND OTHER SENSITIVE VEGETATION.
