Main Street Texarkana is working to bring two new murals to Downtown Texarkana, Arkansas.

As part of an initiative to beautify downtown, Main Street is placing one mural by Art Pletcher on the south side of Union Station, the other by Joel Wright will be on the building next to Zapatas.

“The inspiration for me personally is juxtaposing abstract artwork with surreal artwork and tying that into the history with Texarkana,” Wright emphasized,  “I want to create something that makes people happy.”

The estimate costs for the murals are $9,000 for the Abernathy building next to Zapata’s and $4,500 for the Amtrak mural.  Both murals are drafts and must be approved by the Arkansas Historical Commission this October.

“The installation of murals in downtown Texarkana are one piece of the puzzle to re-establishing a vibrant cultural hub that will serve as a hotbed for private sector investment. I think people are going to be very pleasantly surprised by Main Street Texarkana’s involvement in making a visceral and obvious impact on the aesthetics of downtown in the years to come. The hope is to fund 2-3 murals per year as a component to enriching downtown Texarkana as a destination for locals and tourists alike, said Skylar Rogers.
