According to the State of Arkansas roughly 12,000 unemployed Arkansans will lose their food-stamp benefits at the end of the month due to work requirements.
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities a 1996 welfare law limits individuals to three months of SNAP benefits in any 36-month period when they aren’t employed or in a work or training program for at least 20 hours a week.
The law allows states to suspend the three-month limit in areas with high and sustained unemployment. With unemployment rates dropping many states are loosing the exemption.
According to the CBPP, at least 500,000 and as many as 1 million SNAP recipients will have their benefits cut off in 2016.
