Woman Facing Intox Assault Charge In Collision With Teen On Bicycle

TEXARKANA, Texas–A woman who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when she struck and injured a 17-year-old on a bicycle with her car in Texarkana, Texas, last month has been charged with intoxication assault with serious bodily injury in Bowie County.

Jala Jaleel Frazier, 27, allegedly told responding officers that the boy had run a stop sign when she hit him Aug. 27 at the intersection of W. 15th Street and Mahaffey Street, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The teen was on the ground, “bleeding from a large and deep wound on the top of his head,” when police arrived on scene, the affidavit said. Officers who spoke with Frazier allegedly smelled an odor of alcohol coming from her.

Frazier allegedly admitted to having consumed “several shots of tequila” hours before she got behind the wheel, the affidavit said. Frazier allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken to a local emergency room where her blood was drawn for testing of her blood alcohol level.

Frazier is currently being held in the Bowie County jail with bail set at $75,000. She is represented by the Bowie County Public Defender’s Office.

If convicted of intoxication assault, Frazier faces two to ten years in prison.

The case has been assigned to Fifth District Judge Bill Miller.
