Trial Underway For Teen Accused In Shooting That Wounded Man, Killed Dog

NEW BOSTON, Texas – Testimony began Tuesday in the trial of one of three teens accused in connection with a shooting last year that injured a man and fatally wounded a dog in Texarkana.

Elijah Shaw Lewis, 18, is the first of three men to face a jury in connection with the Sept. 1, 2025, shooting. Lewis, the alleged shooter, is charged with two felonies, aggravated assault and animal cruelty.

A jury of six men and six women was chosen to decide the case Tuesday morning in proceedings before 102nd District Judge Jeff Addison. After opening statements, the jury began hearing testimony from witnesses for the state.

Police responded to a local emergency center in Texarkana on Sept. 1, 2025, regarding a man who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his hip. He reportedly told officers that he and a couple of friends had been riding in a Ford Mustang near a convenience store in the 1300 block of Richmond Road when they were shot at by the occupants of a white Chevrolet Impala, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Kemmanie Isaiah Galbert, 19, one of Lewis’ co-defendants, was allegedly attempting to conceal an AR handgun when he was taken into custody near the scene of the shooting, the affidavit said. Galbert is scheduled for a jury trial before Judge Addison in mid-November, court records show.

Galbert, Elijah Lewis and Elijah Lewis’ brother, Emmanuel Oneal Lewis, 19, had allegedly been at a house in the 1200 block of Pierre St. in Texarkana, Texas, when the Mustang drove by. Believing that one of the occupants had waved a handgun as they drove past, Galbert and the Lewis brothers got in the Impala and began following the Mustang.

Emmanuel Lewis is scheduled for trial before Judge Addison next month, court records show.

The three teens allegedly drove past the Mustang and positioned themselves up the road. Elijah Lewis allegedly opened fire on the Mustang with the AR handgun striking one of the men and hitting a dog that belonged to a nearby resident.

The canine died within a day or two of being shot and its owner is expected to testify during Elijah Lewis’ trial this week.

If convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Elijah Lewis faces two to 20 years in prison. If found guilty of animal cruelty, he faces two to ten years in prison.

Elijah Lewis is currently being held in the Bowie County jail with bail set at $300,000. Emmanuel Lewis and Galbert remain in custody, as well.

Elijah Lewis is represented by Texarkana lawyer Mike Lusk. Assistant District Attorney Katie Carter is representing the state.

A verdict is expected this week.
