Bail At $200K For Men Charged In Texas Blvd. Shooting

TEXARKANA, Texas–Two men accused in connection with an afternoon shooting last week at a gas station in the 3300 block of Texas Blvd. in Texarkana are being held in the Bowie County jail with bail set at $200,000 each.

Dequaveian Martell Williams, 23, and Darqualius Wrightner, 18, are each charged with deadly conduct for their alleged roles in a shooting Sept. 4 in the gas station parking lot. Williams, Wrightner and a third man were allegedly occupants of a red Hyundai Elantra that pulled into the station at about 4:15 p.m., according to a probable cause affidavit filed Thursday.

Williams was allegedly walking toward the store’s entrance when he stopped to talk to another man who was parked at a different gas pump, the affidavit said. Video surveillance collected by the Texarkana Texas Police Dept. allegedly shows Williams and the second man, who is later shot in the leg, raise their fists and face each other as if preparing to fight.

A third man who was reportedly riding with Williams and Wrightner in the red Hyundai reportedly attempted to separate Williams and the alleged victim before the confrontation became physical. The alleged victim reportedly tripped Williams during the scuffle, causing him to fall to the ground.

At this time Wrightner allegedly got out of the Hyundai, carrying a .556 caliber rifle as he approached Williams and the man he was fist fighting.

When the man who is later shot notices Wrightner allegedly approaching with the firearm, he stops fighting Williams, the affidavit said.

“At this point, Williams is seen running up to Wrightner and grabbing the rifle from him,” the affidavit said.

The third man who had been riding with Williams and Wrightner reportedly attempted to stop Williams from using the rifle but was unsuccessful, the affidavit said. Williams, Wrightner and the Hyundai’s third occupant – who was not charged with any crime – are then seen getting back in the car and driving away.

“After reviewing the video, it was clear that Wrightner introduced a deadly weapon into what appeared to be a mutual fight between Williams and [the alleged victim],” the affidavit said. “Williams escalated this mutual fight by grabbing the rifle and shooting.”

Williams allegedly contacted police after the shooting and said he had shot someone who was trying to fight him, the affidavit said. Police caught up to Williams and Wrightner a short time later and they were taken into custody.

If convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Williams and Wrightner each face two to twenty years in prison.

Attorneys of record were not listed Friday for Williams or Wrightner. The case has been assigned to 202nd District Judge John Tidwell.
