Bridging the GAPS of Arkansas Celebrates Red Ribbon Week 2026, Empowering Youth to Become Everyday Heroes

Texarkana, AR – Bridging the GAPS of Arkansas is joining the national observance of Red Ribbon Week 2026, October 23–31, alongside schools, families and communities across the country in promoting substance misuse prevention, healthy decision-making and positive youth development.

This year’s official national theme, “Make a Difference. Be a Hero. Stay Drug Free.™”, encourages young people to see that heroism isn’t about superpowers — it’s about everyday choices that show courage, leadership, kindness and responsibility.

Through educational outreach, school partnerships and interactive prevention activities, Bridging the GAPS of Arkansas aims to give students the knowledge, confidence and support to make informed decisions and positively influence their peers.

Honoring the History of Red Ribbon Week

The Red Ribbon Campaign began in 1985 in remembrance of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, whose life was tragically lost while combating drug trafficking. What began as a tribute to his sacrifice has grown into the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign, uniting millions around a shared commitment to healthy, drug-free lifestyles.

Today, the red ribbon represents more than awareness — it symbolizes community responsibility, education and a collective promise to invest in the well-being of future generations.

Expanding Prevention Education Across Arkansas

In preparation for Red Ribbon Week, Bridging the GAPS of Arkansas has been working with participating schools and community partners to broaden the reach of prevention education across its service regions. Recent efforts include organizing, assembling and preparing Red Ribbon Week educational materials for schools in Camden, Foreman and Blevins, and distributing prevention supplies in El Dorado. Additional outreach and coordination are underway to support students, educators and families through accessible prevention resources.

Throughout the campaign, participating schools and communities will take part in prevention-focused activities designed to:

  • Increase awareness of the risks of substance misuse, including vaping and tobacco use.
  • Encourage healthy decision-making and positive peer influence.
  • Strengthen students’ confidence in resisting peer pressure.
  • Promote leadership, kindness and personal responsibility.
  • Connect youth and families with prevention education and community resources.

By combining education with meaningful interaction, Bridging the GAPS of Arkansas hopes to create memorable learning experiences that help students recognize their potential as everyday heroes.

Prevention Is More Than Saying No

At the heart of this year’s campaign is the belief that prevention begins with education, empowerment and meaningful relationships.
