Arnold Barto “Big Dad” Barfield Jr., born April 27, 1931 to Barto and Ione, became an angel for the lord on Monday, February 15, 2021, peacefully at home with his beloved wife holding his hand.

 

Arnold attended New Boston High School, graduating in 1948. He then attended Texas A&M from 1948-1951. He enlisted in the US Army in 1951 and returned to A&M in 1953 graduating in 1955 with agriculture and economics degree. He was a Captain in the Texas National Guard and retired Lieutenant Colonel from the US Army Reserve.

 

He returned to New Boston upon graduation from A&M, working for his father Barto, until his death and assumed ownership in 2007. Arnold purchased Petroleum Distributing Company from Doyle Corley family in 1959. This business is still operating as Bowie County Distributing.

Cattle and ranching has been a huge part of his life. Arnold loved his brahman. He was a lifetime member of the American Heifers Association, Pan American, American Charolais Association, Texas Brahman Association, New Boston Lion Club, 32 degree Shriner, 60 service years Master Mason, Masonic Lodge #69.

 

Arnold served on the First National Bank as a director for several years and on the New Boston School Board many, many years. He was also a member of Troop 36 Boy Scouts in New Boston.

 

Arnold was very active with the New Boston AG vocational students and 4-H clubs in showing their calves, pigs, rabbits and chickens.

Basically, all types of animals, especially cattle.

 

He was a member of Tapp United Methodist Church, New Boston, Texas.

 

Arnold was a loving, devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was loved by the community of New Boston. Arnold was one of a kind. He would help anyone in need. Always there for his friends and never knew how to say no to anyone in need of help. His wife Lynn adored him and took care of his every need until the end. He and his wife had a beautiful marriage and friendship. They enjoyed hosting Super Bowl parties, going to the Cattlemen’s with their dear friends Ann and Ray Ellisor, sitting on the porch watching the birds. They had such a deep love for each other.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Hopkins, son Arnold Barfield III, (Amy Graham) of New Boston, son Scott Hopkins (Shera) of Red Lick, daughter Jennifer Shows (Fred) of Greenville, SC. Grandsons, Hunter Missildine (Beverly) of Avery, Texas, Hudson, Seth, Sawyer Hopkins of Red Lick, Texas, granddaughters Madison, Morgan Sherbondy of Greenville, SC and Sydney Hopkins of Red Lick. Sister Pat Johnson (Dr.

Robert Henry) Brownwood, Texas, nephews Robert Johnson, Jr (Caryl) Brownwood, Texas, Bart Johnson (Debra) Brownwood, Texas, Clay Raines (Kristi), Lubbock, Texas. Niece, Lee Ann Hasek (Mark) Maumelle, Arkansas.

 

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, sister Bobbie Raines of Lubbock, Texas, daughter Brenda Slater and grandson Alex Barfield of New Boston, Texas.

 

Funeral service will be held at Tapp United Methodist Church at 1 pm on Monday, February 22, 2021 with Tommy Earl Burton officiating.

Visitation prior to service from 12-1 under the direction of Bates-Rolf Funeral Home, New Boston, Texas. Interment will be at Chapelwood Memorial Gardens, Nash, Texas.
