Mary Delle “Sugar” Smolarz (12/21/49), affectionately known as “Mom”/“MD”, and to those lucky enough to be loved by her, simply as “Sugar”, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 13, 2026, surrounded by family and friends at the age of 76.

Sugar had a heart of gold. Whether it was a birthday, surgery, the loss of a loved one, or just a random Tuesday, you could guarantee Sugar was going to be out running the roads (mostly in her lime green VW bug) delivering her famous chocolate chip cookies or warm, freshly baked bread. Taking care of others was simply who she was, never asking for anything in return.

Born and raised in Paris, TX, Sugar later met and married Gregory Smolarz, MD, affectionately known as “Doc” or “Papa Smurf”, and followed him as he completed his orthopedic training. Life ultimately landed them in Texarkana, TX, where she transitioned to her favorite job as Mom to her 4 boys.

Sugar is survived by Papa Smurf and their 4 boys, Ryan (Kelli), Casey (Nicole), Gregory/“Uncle Bubbles,” and Randle (Sarah). As well as her favorites, grandchildren Asher, Harper, Hadleigh, Ryker, Leah, and Logan. Upon entering heaven, she will be reunited with her parents, Casey and Alma Nix, brothers Larry and Dan Nix, and dear friend Kathy Rochelle, as well as many others.

As the boys were growing up, you could always find Mom at a ball field. Typically standing between fields so she could watch all of them playing at once. As they got older and started their own families, it was guaranteed she would have at least one grandchild hanging on to her and typically more. They could not wait for their next trip to “Sugar Shack” to spend time with her and Papa Smurf and eat all the cookies they wanted. Each and everyone of them love her and will miss her tremendously.

She loved her husband, sons and grandchildren to no end, and if you made the mistake of upsetting any of them, she was going to handle it with her tiny self (and possibly her wooden spoon).

Mom, you were small in stature, but my gosh, you made up for it with your love, character, an willingness to go the extra mile regardless of the sacrifice. We will miss you dearly, but rejoice in the fact that you are at peace. We know you will be watching over us each step along our way. We LOVE YOU.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, or that you make someone’s day with a batch of chocolate chip cookies or homemade bread because we all know, that’s what Sugar would want.
