Neighbor’s 911 call leads to four juvenile arrests, 18 pairs of stolen shoes recovered

TEXARKANA, Texas — A neighbor who saw something out of place on a Tuesday morning ended up putting four juveniles in handcuffs and recovering 18 pairs of high-end sneakers, according to the Texarkana Texas Police Department.

Around 9:30 a.m., a resident near College Drive and Tanglewood Street called 911 after watching a group of juveniles walk out of a neighbor’s garage, pull the door shut behind them and run.

Officer Rayveun Blakely was close by when the call was dispatched. He spotted the group as they crossed Richmond Road and headed toward an apartment complex on Nichols Drive. The group scattered when they saw him.

Blakely chased one of them on foot. The juvenile tried to climb a fence, fell, and Blakely caught him behind a house on Shady Lane. Other officers found three more juveniles inside the apartment complex.

Back at the house on College Drive, officers could see empty shoe boxes scattered across the garage floor and could hear an alarm going off inside the residence. They were not able to get into the garage at that point, but police said there was enough visible from outside to confirm a break-in.

The shoes turned up in the juveniles’ backpacks — several pairs of new, high-dollar sneakers, including Nike Air Jordans. Officers recovered 18 pairs in all.

Four juveniles, ages 14, 14, 15 and 16, were arrested and charged with Burglary of a Habitation, a second-degree felony under Texas law. The 15-year-old who ran from Blakely was also charged with Evading Detention. All four were taken to the juvenile detention center and turned over to juvenile authorities.

Because of their ages, the juveniles are not being identified.

Police used the case to repeat a familiar request: call it in.

“That neighbor saw something suspicious, made the call, and help was on the way quickly,” the department said in a release.
