Family Medical Group celebrates new full-time physician at Kings Highway clinic

Family Medical Group of Texarkana held a ribbon cutting Tuesday to welcome Dr. Andrew LeGrand, DO, the first physician to practice full time at the clinic’s 4105 N. Kings Highway location.

Until now, the Kings Highway clinic was staffed by two nurse practitioners. LeGrand joined the practice this summer after finishing his family medicine residency, and he now sees patients there alongside nurse practitioner Pat Smith.

For LeGrand, the new job is a homecoming. He grew up in Texarkana and graduated from Texas High School before earning his undergraduate degree at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. He went on to medical school at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, then returned to Texarkana for three years of residency at the UAMS Southwest Family Practice Program, where he served as chief resident in his final year.

“It’s nice to be back home and see people that I grew up with, people who grew up with my parents,” LeGrand said. “It’s pretty special being able to practice back here.”

He admitted the transition from hometown kid to hometown doctor takes some getting used to.

“It’s a little weird, but it’s pretty cool too,” he said. “I already have these relationships with all the people I grew up with, all the people that know me, know my family, know my in-laws. It’s nice to be able to come back in a professional manner and actually be able to help take care of them.”

The clinic treats patients of all ages, from children to seniors. LeGrand said services include well-child exams and vaccines, along with preventive care such as screenings for colon, breast, lung and cervical cancer. The office handles women’s preventive health, including Pap smears and mammograms, as well as chronic conditions like diabetes, COPD and heart failure.

Acute care is also available. LeGrand said the clinic can handle stitches and in-office procedures including joint injections, skin cancer removal and cryotherapy.

“Pretty much the full gamut,” he said.

LeGrand is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He and his wife, Sydney, have a daughter and are expecting their second child this year. Outside the clinic, he enjoys hunting, fishing and following Razorback athletics.
