ASHDOWN, Ark. — A 35-year-old man is dead and a woman is in custody after a shooting early June 9 at a home on Brodie Lane, the Ashdown Police Department said, but no charges have been filed at this time.
Officers from the Ashdown Police Department and deputies from the Little River County Sheriff’s Office responded around 6:25 a.m. to a report that a woman had shot her boyfriend in the 600 block of Brodie Lane, according to a statement from Police Chief Boyd Kennemore.
When they arrived, officers found Derrick Burgess, 35, lying near the carport of the residence with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Burgess died from his injuries before emergency responders reached the scene.

Summer Grimes, 49, was taken into custody at the scene, according to the department. The release did not list any formal charges, and the case remains under active investigation.
Investigators from the Ashdown Police Department, the Arkansas State Police, the 8th South Drug Task Force and the 9th West Drug Task Force are working the case, police said. Officers have executed multiple search warrants, which the department said led to the recovery of “a significant number of firearms and illegal narcotics.”
According to an Arkansas State Police press release, at the request of the Ashdown Police Department, special agents with the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division (CID) are investigating a fatal shooting in Ashdown.
Upon completion of the investigation, CID special agents will submit a case file to the Little River County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review and a determination regarding any potential criminal charges.
In its statement, the Ashdown Police Department sought to reassure residents, calling the shooting “an isolated incident” that “poses no ongoing threat to the community.” The chief also thanked the agencies assisting in the investigation.
